"Alexandria is way better without that shallow snake that played incubator."

His words made my skin crawl. Zach was never in Avery's fan club. The only reason he was using Chelsea’s middle name was because she’d hate it, and since she removed herself from my life, he started showing the depths of his dislike for my ex-wife.

"Zach, stop talking about her like that. I told you before, bad mouthing is not helping anyone."

"Oh, no, you don't get to jump in and protect the bitch again. I can say whatever I want. I hope Alex's first words will be ‘fuck you, mom’ or worse."

"Zach..."

"Shut up. We need to cover the ER today; all your patients are fine, but I need your input on one of my cases."

Good. Work was a safe territory right now.

"What's up?"

"Let's walk, and I'll present you with one of my long-term patients."

"Chronic?"

"Genetic. I've been treating him since he was thirteen."

Considering we'd been primary doctors for only a few four years, I got that the patient couldn’t be very old.

"Shouldn't he be in pediatrics?"

"When I first took the case he was. I was working under Dr. Edel back then and requested to stay up to date when Jessica became the head doctor. He recently was transferred to General."

"You sound invested," I said with suspicion because it was not like Zach to get attached to his cases.

"Yeah, this kid makes me feel like a rock star. I used to be his favorite person in this hospital."

"Used to?"

We walked a long hallway through the ICU and finally got to our destination. Behind the glass doors, I saw a young man with a bandage on his head, an awful amount of tubes in his nose and mouth, but he was smiling, holding a woman's hand. Zach slid the door open, and I could hear the boy talk.

"Please don't leave; it's easier to breath when you're with me."

London smiled at him and fluffed his pillow then looked up at me and Zach.

"I have other patients, Johnny, stop trying to charm me. Plus, your doctors are here to check with you, and I should get out of the way."

It was nothing unusual to see our patients trying to steal London's time, and by the scowl on Zach's face, I'd say he was not used to it yet.

"He won't mind. You won't mind, Dr. Ford, right?"

"Jonny, how about you put that energy into fighting with your illness and not trying to seduce my fiancée."

"Every time you say she's your fiancée, my lungs give out a little more." The dark humor of the young man pulled a strong laugh from me, and the attention of the room shifted in my direction.

London gave me one of her trademark smiles and waved, and I winked at her. Everyone was happier since London became part of our inner circle and took on the full-time job of keeping Zachary in check.

"Hello, Jonny, my name is Dr. Sullivan, and Dr. Ford thinks it's wise if I give you a consult today."

"Are you another pulmonologist?"

"No. London, present the file, please."

"Of course, Dr. Sullivan. John Rossi is one of our long-time patients; he suffers from cystic fibrosis that has developed at a non-aggressive rate. Yesterday, he tripped and fell, giving himself a concussion and shortness of breath. Also, for an unknown reason, he lost feeling in his right arm. We cleared his airways and administrated a pancreatic enzyme supplement in addition to his inhaling antibiotics, but no improvement has been seen with his motor function."
