“What do I need to know for the Popov business?”

“You know the basics. All you need now is to push Popov to vouch for us in front of his contact and bring them here for a sit down. Cut him a share and that’s it. I don’t want him in my business long term.” Because the man was trouble, and he was shitty in business. “People keep telling me they saw you with his daughter around town. Is that turning into something?”

“Katja? No, she’s a friend. We’re hanging out, that’s all.”

“She might be useful to you, but don’t push her into something ugly, alright?”

“Of course not.” I got some info out of Katja, and it was useful to know she could tell me things I wasn’t able to find out on my own, but she was also a nice person. I wasn’t going to fuck her.

“Popov is supposed to go to Russia soon, but according to what he’s been saying, he needs to wait for an invitation.”

“And you think he’s just stalling to use his power to associate with the family.”

“Exactly. Popov likes to have friends in high places and he’s trying to solidify relationships. You need to make sure he gets that invitation soon. I’m losing my patience.”

“I’ll take care of it.” A plan started to take shape in my head, but I had to gather some intel first. Maybe I was able to kill two birds with one stone – or in this case, just one fat crow – Alexei Popov. My father was giving me a window to fix the mess my life was turning into.

“I have no doubts, but you need to do something else first.”

“What’s that?”

“Go upstairs and say hello to your mother.”

“I’m gonna take her out to lunch. Spend some time together since you’re leaving the city. Wanna join us, old man?”

“If you stop with the old man shit, yes.”

“I’ll drive.” He frowned at me. The old man hated to be driven around. Too bad.

I dropped my parents home after lunch and then started to make my way back to my house. I was shuffling through my playlist when Katja’s name flashed across my dashboard screen and interrupted the song, so I pressed a button to answer her call.

“Nucci.”

“Yes, Enzo, I have your number saved. I know who you are.”

“Sorry, old habits. What can I help you with?”

“Well, Nucci, guess who’s back in town.” She sounded cheerful. “Your awesome friend, Katja Popova. Please tell me you’re not busy tonight.”

My nights were extremely open since the only woman that captured my interest with a vivacious intensity was not available.

“Not really. Why?”

“Great, so you can take me out of the house. Dinner, movie, bowling, couponing – we can do whatever you want.”

“Didn’t you just come home? Already bored.”

“I’m not even unpacked yet, but there’s a weird energy around here.” Fuck, was Ludmila ok?

“Everything alright?”

“I don’t know, Dad is acting weird, and he’s not drunk which makes it even weirder. I don’t like it. Hey, if you have something else to do, I get it. I’m a big girl.”

“No, no. Let’s go grab some dinner.”

“Can we have sushi?”
