“I don’t get it, Enzo.”

“What’s that?”

“You said you’re so crazy about this woman, but still, you’re spending all your free time with me.”

“We don’t spend that much time together.”

“Isn’t this woman jealous?”

“No, Katja.”

“You’re not telling her you’re hanging out with me, are you?”

I had no choice. They lived under the same roof.

“Yes, I do.”

“Why isn’t she with you all the time?”

My grip tightened around the steering wheel. Katja’s words hit too close to home, even if she took a shot in the dark. I wanted Ludmila with me all day long, but it was impossible – for now.

“It’s complicated, Katja, but it doesn’t change anything. I can’t be with her as much as I’d like, but it doesn’t change the way I feel about you.”

“Ouch. Ok, I got it.”

“Yeah, well, I thought you got it the first time.” I mumbled.

“Hey, I’m serious now. I won’t try anything, and I will move on. I’m just trying to be your friend here. We still have that, right?”

Did we? I didn’t want to lead Katja on, and she clearly was catching feelings. It would be ruthless to cut her off right now, but sure there wouldn’t be any more dinner dates in our future.

“Sure.”

“You said she can’t be with you. Why?”

Damn it.

“It’s complicated, Katja. I plan on changing that anyways.”

“I see. Let me know if I can help.”

“Sure.” I abstained from telling her that she could help me by selling out her father because the one who held me by the balls was none other than Ludmila Popova. Chances were, I didn’t have to bother thinking about Katja, and what she was feeling, because soon she’d find out about her stepmother and me and she’d cut things off herself. I mean, the woman just threw herself at my feet with a ‘’fuck me, Enzo’’ sign and I turned her down. I didn’t have to be a genius to realize she’d throw a fit when she learned I did it because I was banging her father’s wife.

When I pulled up to the gate of her house, Katja punched in a code and the gates opened. While I was going up the driveway, I spotted a black Jeep behind us. Great, now Popov was here, and I had to see his insufferable face. I put the car in park and got out to open Katja’s door. When I looked up at the Jeep, I saw Ludmila behind the wheel and Alexei in the passenger seat, looking at me with a greedy smile on his face. He got out of the car with his hands wide open and wobbling on his feet.

“Ah, look what we have here: the love birds!”

“Alexei.” I nodded toward him, but I couldn’t help looking at Ludmila. She was so stunning, again wrapped in a dress the same color of her eyes. Her golden hair was up in a bun, and she looked like an empress among peasants standing there.

“Did you have some fun with my daughter?”

“We had dinner,” I answered with a hard tone.

“Dinner? Ok, we get it, Mr. Nucci, you’re a gentleman. Stop wasting time and take Katja to your bed. I won’t mind.” Alexei made two steps toward me and had to stop because he almost fell flat on his face. He was reeking of vodka.

“I don’t appreciate when you talk about your own daughter like that, Popov. I suggest you go inside.”

“You’re no fun, just like your father. Katja doesn’t mind. Do you, doch?”
