“Come in.”

Katja stepped in my room. She’d changed into leggings and a white tank top and climbed onto the middle of my bed. Something was different about her tonight – I couldn’t pinpoint what, but she didn’t have a smile on her face like she usually did. No, tonight she looked thoughtful.

“Katja, don’t worry. I’m fine.”

“Oh, I’m not worried. I went downstairs to get a bottle of water and saw Dad was ready to pass out. He probably won’t be up ’till morning, so I don’t think he’ll bother you tonight.”

“Oh.” I tried my best to smile and put on a brave face. “Is everything ok with you?”

“Not really. No.” She crossed her legs Turkish-style. “Enzo and I kissed tonight.”

I felt like a millstone dropped in my stomach and I lost the ability to breath. My mouth was open, but no air was coming in. This was it, wasn’t it? He was finally taking my advice and leaving this affair behind for something – someone – that could make him happy.

“Oh.” This was all I could articulate.

“He turned me down.”

I hoped that the relief that I felt didn’t reflect on my face, because if so, Katja would see right through it.

“I…well, I’m sorry to hear that. How are you feeling?” The last thing I wanted was to hurt Katja because of my selfishness. If her heart was broken, it was just another casualty of my indiscretion that was going to stain my soul. I should have thought about that. Of course, she fell for him, how could she not? Enzo Nucci was a beautiful man with the body of a Roman warrior, and he was powerful, attentive, and intoxicatingly charming. Any woman in his proximity was bound to be his victim. His black eyes had a pull stronger than a magnet, and Katja was not immune to it.

That made me think about the other women that have been in his life before. Katja was mesmerized after a few platonic meetings, but I was under him; I was slave to the sky-shattering orgasms he could give a woman, and the way he’d worshipped my body, making me feel wanted and powerful. How could other women walk away from that? Because I sure couldn’t.

“I’m fine.” She shrugged, still looking at me in a weird way. “Maybe a little disappointed. I wouldn’t have minded riding his dick, you know? He’s hot. Really hot. Like makes you wanna scream into a pillow hot.”

I knew that!

There was another woman hidden in my soul, the one that could have been Ludmila if Alexei wouldn’t have trapped her with fear. She was bold and courageous, fearless and sensual, desirable and sexy, and God, she was a possessive little bitch. That woman only peaked out when I was around Enzo, but now she was trying to escape again, pushing on my skin to force me let her out. She wanted to take Katja by the throat and tell her to never speak about Enzo like that again because Enzo belonged to her, and she wasn’t willing to share. Ever.

In the end, my fearful, weak self-won.

“I’ve never heard you talk so passionately about a man.”

“There aren’t many men like him.” She was right. Enzo was an alpha, powerful and with honor. There weren’t many left. God knew Alexei was merely a cardboard copy of a real man. “It doesn’t matter because he said no.”

“I’m sorry if he made you feel embarrassed, Katja.” And I was, but I wasn’t sorry he turned down her passes.

“I’m not. He’s still my friend and he’s an awesome guy to hang with, even if it’s not a romantic thing. You wanna know why he turned me down?”

I already knew, and it filled me with infinite pleasure.

“I don’t think it’s any of my business, Katja.”

“I’ll tell you anyways. There’s someone else in his life. Another woman.”

“Oh.” Not knowing how to respond to that, I picked up the hairbrush and distracted myself with it.

“He seemed very serious about her. I don’t think this woman knows how lucky she is, and not only because Enzo is rich and hot, but I was right there, telling him he can have me, and he said no. I’m not ugly, am I?”

“Khristos, of course not. You are a beautiful girl, Katja.” It was true. She took after her mother with her reddish-chestnut thick hair and harmonious body. Men found her desirable, and it was why I was so restless every time she and Enzo spent time together.

“Exactly. He could have just gone with it and asked me to keep the secret. Men have affairs all the time, but he said no. She’s lucky.”

“Yes, I guess you are right.” What a shame that ‘she’ of all people couldn’t enjoy her luck to have a man like Enzo.

“I know it’s you, Ludmila.”

A cold, merciless wave of shock crushed over me. It was so powerful, it made me drop the brush from my hand.
