I did and when I pushed the door closed, I put her down. “You know, Jamie, I’m starting to get used to you carrying me around. It’s nice.” She gave me one of her playful smirks and hobbled over to the wooden bench to fetch her backpack. She held up the radio. “I’m going to check in with Mark and let him know we’re doing fine up here. I’ll ask him to update your friends.”

My friends… Lincoln.

Suddenly, the warm cocoon of our fantasy world crumbled. As she spoke into the radio, she watched me with a frown. I didn’t hear much of the conversation between her and whoever was on the other end because I was busy thinking about Lincoln. Now that I wasn’t caught up in sexual bliss and the amazing feeling of being guilt-free for once, worry seeped in. I might lose a valuable friendship…

“Jamie?”

I turned back to Charlotte. “Hmmm?”

“I just watched you transform from Jamie to James Wilfred right before my eyes.” Her frown deepened. “What’s wrong?”

I couldn’t help but be amused by the comparison. Chuckling, I asked, “How are they not the same person?”

“James Wilfred is much more uptight and somber than Jamie.”

Stroking my chin, I murmured, “I see.”

“Don’t get me wrong, I like them both, but James Wilfred’s scowl just now has me worried.” She gazed at me with a hint of uncertainty.

“Don’t be.”

“It’s hard not to be. What were you thinking about?”

Threading my fingers through my hair, I exhaled loudly. “The mention of my friends reminded me that I slept with the woman who Lincoln had hopes of getting back with.”

Her gaze lowered to the floor and I rushed to explain, “Charlotte, I don’t want you to think I regret last night. Hell, I want more of last night.”

Her eyes flew back up to connect with mine.

“And what you said about Lincoln assuming that you’d want to rekindle a romantic relationship… You were right. He should have spoken to you first.”

“But you still think we’re in the wrong for pursuing what’s between us?” she asked, watching me closely.

I wasn’t even sure what to say. Maybe I was dead wrong for wanting her, but I had no control over what I felt.

“The only thing I regret is not telling Lincoln how I felt about you after our first kiss. He’ll probably be twice as hurt when he finds out we went much further.”

Charlotte shut her eyes and groaned. “So, you’re definitely going to tell him?”

“I have to…” Right? He was one of my best friends. I couldn’t keep something major from him, especially this. I slept with his ex-girlfriend whom he still had feelings for.

“I never meant to cause trouble between you two,” she said.

“I know.”

“Is there any way we could put all the negative stuff aside and just have… one more day?”

One more day of just us. That was what I wanted too. Well, I would have loved more than one day, but I’d take what I could get.

“Of course.”

Charlotte and I ended up getting two more days instead of one. The rain stopped yesterday evening, but the terrain back to the resort was still too dangerous to tread. Both Charlotte and her supervisor thought it was best for us to wait at least another day for the water to dry up before making the journey.

However, she and I were outside, taking a walk. It was much safer because we were uphill, far from the areas that had been flooded. She said she had another surprise for me. A belated birthday present.

She was a little ahead of me, and I observed the way she favored her injured ankle. I wasn’t keen on the idea of her walking yet, but she said that she was fine.

She glanced back with a smile. “What’s the matter, city boy? Can’t keep up?”
