He fell quiet. I guess he was trying to work through his shock to formulate a response.

Before he did, my phone beeped. When I glanced at it, I saw Michael’s name. “I have to go, Dad. Important business call. You understand, right?”

“Son—”

I switched over to Facetime. Michael’s, Spencer’s, and Alex’s faces popped up on the screen.

“Well, well, if it isn’t Benedict Arnold,” Alex greeted.

I sighed and looked skyward while Michael chuckled. If there was one person who could make the grouch laugh, it was Alex.

“I’m not a traitor,” I said.

“He’s bloody dramatic, isn’t he?” Spencer said.

“Dramatic? That’s what Michael and Spencer keep telling me,” Alex grumbled as he glared at me. “But I don’t think I’m wrong.”

“You joined the call so you can’t hate me all that much,” I threw back.

“Of course, I don’t hate you. I’m upset because I warned you, didn’t I? You know who hates you? Lincoln.”

My jaw tightened. “Michael, how is he?”

His eyebrows shot up. Michael lived in LA so he and Lincoln saw each other more often. “He’s been… broody. On the bright side, I doubt he really hates you as Alex thinks.”

I scrubbed a hand over my face. I was tempted to fly out to LA and force him to talk to me.

“How are you, mate?” Spencer asked, watching me closely.

“I’ve been better. I’ll be fine once Lincoln calms down and talks to me. I’d be on cloud nine if I could talk to Charlotte.”

There was a chorus of groans and “Oh, god,” “Bloody hell,” and “Are you serious?”

I’d always been comfortable expressing most things I felt around these guys. That said a lot because I clammed up tighter than a vise around everyone else… except Charlotte.

“I can’t stop thinking about her,” I defended.

“I told you he was in love,” Spencer said.

“I’m not.” I frowned. “I didn’t get enough time with her to be sure…”

“Then spend more time with her,” Michael suggested. “It’s not fucking science. She might be the one.”

That resulted in a string of expletives from Alex. “I can’t believe this, Michael. You’re encouraging foolishness? Weren’t you the one who agreed with me that romance is a load of crap and there’s no such thing as the one?”

“I changed my mind.” Michael shrugged. “Jamie was happy. I’ve never seen him glow the way he did after being stranded with Charlotte in the woods.”

“I didn’t glow,” I scoffed.

Spencer roared. “You glowed… like a pregnant woman.”

I rolled my eyes but said nothing. At least two of my friends understood.

“The one might not exist for everybody,” Michael reasoned. “Definitely not for me. But maybe Jamie is one of the lucky few…” He stroked his chin. “All I’m saying is that if he has strong feelings for Charlotte, it’s worth exploring. It’s unfortunate that he had to catch feelings for Lincoln’s ex, but if she’s who makes him happy…”

“Blimey, did someone slip something into his drink in Hawaii?” Spencer mused.

We all gawked at Michael. I’d never heard him sound like this.
