When he returned his attention to me, I smiled. “Busy day?”

He blew out a breath. “Yeah. I have to go. We’ll talk later.”

“Bye, Jamie,” I said, not caring if I sounded too dreamy or adoring. He had that effect on me. I felt as if I floated on clouds each time we spoke.

“Bye, Jamie,” Vera and Kaia sang as they appeared over my shoulders to wave to him.

He chuckled—maybe because of their sing-song, saccharine chorus. “Bye, ladies.”

When I hung up, I playfully nudged Kaia who made kissing noises, and then repeated, “Bye, Jamie,” in the tone I’d just used.

“Shut up,” I said, rolling my eyes.

She giggled and Vera joined in.

“You’re so in love,” Kaia remarked.

I gave her a pointed look but didn’t bother to deny the obvious.

Vera watched me closely, wearing a little smirk. “I guess you’ve changed your mind about not wanting to settle down.”

“Hey, I recall saying that I wouldn’t turn away Mr. Right if he appeared,” I reminded her.

She raised her eyebrows. “So Jamie is Mr. Right?”

Kaia’s head swiveled as she glanced at us. “Of course, he is,” she answered before I could say a word. “Jamie is perfect.”

I laughed. “How do you know that, Kaia?”

“Well, he’s so kind to me. He’s helped me out a lot with my dad. I took his advice to meet Dad halfway and things have been great between us. Together, we came up with the perfect solution.”

“What’s that?” Vera asked while I listened with pride. Jamie was going to make a great father someday.

“Since I want to travel and see the world, I’ve joined this medical volunteer program in South America. I’ll be there for six months aiding doctors and nurses in impoverished areas, so I’ll get a feel for the whole medical scene while exploring a new country.”

Vera nodded. “That’s a great idea.”

“Dad was so happy when I told him I was willing to try out medicine to see if I liked it,” Kaia continued enthusiastically. “I never really gave it a chance. I just opposed the idea because I felt like Dad was forcing me into it. If I like the experience, then I might go to medical school after all. I mean, I don’t have to be stuck working in a hospital, I can still be a doctor and travel as Jamie said. Plus, he insisted on being my sponsor for my six-month trip.”

Kaia turned to me. “He’s so cool, Char. If he treats me, a practical stranger, so great, I can imagine how well he treats his girlfriend.”

I grinned. He treated me like the most precious thing in his life. “You're right. He is perfect.” And I couldn’t wait to be with him in a few days…

“Mhmm,” Vera hummed. “So have you guys worked things out with Lincoln?”

My mood plummeted. “I haven’t spoken to him since he found me in Jamie’s hotel suite. I’ve heard Jamie on the phone with him a few times, but their interactions always sound so tense. Jamie doesn’t talk about it. I guess he doesn’t want me to worry.“

Vera quirked an eyebrow. “Does he know you two are a couple?”

“No…” I nibbled my lower lip and gave Vera and Kaia a sheepish look as they exchanged glances. “Jamie and I have kept our relationship on the down low for Lincoln’s sake, but we’ll have to tell him soon. I think that Jamie wants to stop hiding us from his friends. He’s said as much.”

We both agreed to date in secret until we were certain of the direction we were heading in. After months together with our feelings growing… We were sure.

I flew into Jamie’s arms the moment I spotted him in the crowded airport. He lifted me off my feet and my legs wrapped around him. I think we both forgot where we were as we kissed.

“I missed you so much, woman,” he growled against my lips.

“I hope you’re going to show me how much when we get back to your place.”
