“What makes you think I’ll wait that long? I’ll fuck in the back of my?—”

“Jamie.” My smile broke through even as I swatted him on the arm.

He grinned wickedly and that’s when I noticed people watching us.

“Oh, my God. We’re in the middle of an airport,” I muttered as I wiggled out of his arms. He didn’t look too happy about our broken connection.

“Let’s go,” he said, reaching for the suitcase I had abandoned. “I can’t wait to get you all to myself.”

Hand-in-hand, we weaved through the crowd, already lost in the bubble that enveloped us when we were together. Everything else faded into the background.

“Happy birthday, gorgeous,” Jamie purred into my ear as he embraced me from behind.

My eyes fluttered closed and I leaned into him as he ran his lips down the column of my neck. “I feel like it’s been my birthday for two weeks straight.”

Seriously… Since I touched down in Manhattan, Jamie had been spoiling me rotten. I had been to the most upscale restaurants in New York, shopped until I damn near dropped in the most expensive boutiques, and been primped and pampered non-stop.

Last night, we arrived in Vancouver because Jamie had a business meeting tomorrow. I was celebrating my birthday in a beautiful city and in a hotel that cost an arm and leg per night. I opened my eyes to gaze out at the view of the heart of Vancouver from our suite’s balcony. I’d been having a great time with Jamie, getting more than a taste of his billionaire lifestyle.

“You deserve to be spoiled and pampered,” he said, pulling away.

I then felt something cool settle around my neck. I gasped when I looked down and saw an exquisite necklace. The pendant was a mesmerizing opal that swirled with greens, blues, and oranges. They changed with the light’s angle. A halo of diamonds surrounded the gem. The stones were so brilliant I bet they could be seen from space.

I ran a finger over the platinum chain and turned to face Jamie. “Jamie, I can’t accept this…”

The skin between his eyebrows puckered. “You don’t like it?”

“I do. It’s just…” My face prickled with warmth. “You’ve already spent a fortune on me.” The gown that he got me for the gala he was taking me to this weekend cost more than I made in months. Then there were the other gifts—more clothes, jewelry, and shoes.

“I haven’t spent nearly enough,” he refuted.

I let out a shocked snort. “You don’t have to buy me expensive things, Jamie.”

“I want to.” As he fingered the sleek necklace, the warmth of his touch soaked into my skin. “I saw this and it reminded me of you. Beautiful and unique.”

My heart melted like hot butter. It took getting used to… being indulged like this… I took a deep breath and decided to accept it.

“It’s lovely, Jamie. Thank you,” I whispered as I leaned in to kiss him.

His lips were warm and soft and the way they moved over mine made my entire body tingle with need.

He pulled back to gaze at me with blatant affection. “I want to celebrate all of your birthdays with you. I want to spend money on you, make love to you, and indulge you in every way. Charlotte, I…”

I saw the adoration in his eyes and my breath hitched. He was about to say the three magical words. My heart raced as I prepared to say them back.

However, he didn’t get the chance because his phone rang. Jamie blew out an annoyed breath and reached into his pocket for the device.

I smiled and whispered, “It’s okay,” when he gave me an apologetic look. I understood that he was juggling work while giving me his time.

Jamie’s expression shuttered when he looked at the screen. His change of mood made my eyebrows snap together. I assumed it was work until he answered.

“Lincoln, hi.” His gaze flickered briefly to me and then he sighed heavily. “I know… But you’ve been ignoring my calls…”

I folded my arms around my middle, feeling awkward as I listened to his side of the conversation. While we’d been on cloud nine, enjoying being with each other, Lincoln was a dark cloud that lingered in the background waiting to overshadow our happiness.

“What am I supposed to do when you won’t even give me the time of day?” Jamie asked as he raked his fingers through his hair.

His growing agitation sent a sliver of guilt through me, which I hadn’t felt in a while. I was the cause of this strain on his important friendship. That thought made me turn away from him to stare out at the sprawling cityscape beneath us.
