I swallowed.

“Jesus, Charlotte, answer me. Please.”

Clearing my throat, I spat, “What do you want, Jamie?”

He hesitated. I guess he wasn’t expecting my tone. “Are you alright?”

“I’m fine.”

“Where are you?”

“None of your business. I’m no longer your business.”

“What the hell is going on, Charlotte? Are you mad at me? Still, you can’t just disappear. I almost reported you as missing, woman,” he growled. “That is, until security told me you left with your suitcase. What. The. Fuck?”

“You have some nerve being angry. I’m the one who has the right to be pissed. And I can’t believe you’d think I still want anything to do with you.”

Jamie paused. “What? Is this about what my father said? Charlotte…”

My control slipped. “No, it’s about your fiancée, you… you… jerk!”

“My what?”

I scoffed. He still felt the need to keep up his act. Unbelievable. “You are a lying, cheating asshole, Jamie Winchester. A real piece of work.”

“Whoa. I might be an asshole sometimes but a lying, cheating one…? What are you talking about?”

Beyond agitated, I got up from my bed and paced. “Your wife-to-be showed up at your place, Jamie. She and I had a nice chat.”

He laughed, but I detected little humor and plenty of disbelief, which had me perplexed. “Charlotte, is this some kind of joke?”

“Oh, my gosh! Drop the act, Jamie. The jig is up. I met Gwendolyn.”

“Who? I don’t know…” There was a long pause and then he groaned. “Oh… shit. I can explain…”

It was my turn to laugh. “Yeah, I bet if given the chance, you’ll spin your lies to perfection. Congratulations on playing me for a fool for months. Screw you, Jamie.”

“No, Charlotte, wait?—”

I hung up because I couldn’t bear to hear his voice any longer and a tiny part of me was afraid he’d talk me right back into his charming web—I was that weak to him. And that knowledge brought on fresh tears…

My pity party was interrupted by a sharp knock. “Charlotte?”

I sniffed, wiped away my tears, and scowled at the door. “I’m busy, Mom.”

“Being miserable I know, but there’s someone here to see you.”

I rolled my eyes. “I told you not to call Vicky.” For one, my sister had her hands full with her family. Secondly… I was too humiliated to share my pain with anyone at the moment.

“It’s not Vicky.”

My heart stuttered, came to a halt, and then began to race. Was it Jamie? I sprang up off the bed and looked around as if I could find a place to hide from him. How could he possibly be here? I just spoke to him… but he could have already been in Golden Beach by the time he called…

“Wh-who is it?” I stuttered.

“It’s Lincoln, sweetheart.”

What?
