“I’m not delusional,” I said. “This place is huge, at least three floors and the size of a high school, there’s no way it doesn’t have at least some painful history.”

“You’re right,” Lucien said. “Give me a second.”

We all went quiet as he took a deep breath and closed his eyes. His long eyelashes fanned on his face and he took purposeful even breaths as he stood still.

“What is he doing?” Eli whispered… which with Eli, it wasn’t that quiet. Lucien popped his eyes open and pursed his lips.

“Testing my powers, now shut it,” he grumbled before closing his eyes. This time Eli didn’t say a word. In fact, not one of us moved as we watched him.

The air shifted around us, growing power with sparks of electricity before he slowly blinked his eyes open. They were glazed over and he started moving with stiff steps. I didn’t dare speak as I walked close behind him.

Jayce hurried ahead of him at one point to move debris, unsure if he could see it easily. For all we knew he was seeing this place in a different era than we were.

Lucien continued walking through the winding hallways and up a flight of stairs. We tried our best to not let him get hurt or disturb the trance. I was far too curious to see where this was going to lead us.

Soft, childlike laughter echoed in the hall, muffled like it was coming from behind a closed door. It grew louder as we reached a set of double doors at the end of the hallway.

Finally, Lucien came to a halt. His body started to sag but Eli and Jayce were there to catch him.

“That was fucking crazy,” Lucien muttered as he blinked his eyes. “The entire place was new and full of children. But this one little girl, blond ringlets and bright-green eyes, led me up here. Whatever we need to know. It’s in this room.”

We all looked at the door in front of us with wide eyes.

Raven

What can be behind these doors? I'm more than a little nervous to see how many spirits are waiting for us behind there. Nothing good can really come from a combination of asylum and orphanage.

Talk about the makings for a real horror movie moment.

"Eli, do you want to wait out here? Jayce, are you getting anything?" I questioned the two of them. My nerves had me rushing out the words but they didn’t call me on it.

"Just a mix of emotions. No impending doom," Jayce answered.

"Not that I don't trust Lucien, but let's open the doors and you tell me how many you see," Eli suggested.

"You know that I don't always see them," I reminded him. "I’ll tell you what I do see and you let me know if you feel a memory coming on.”

"I'll do my best. Don't let me hit the floor," he said as he let out a breath. We were all a nervous mess.

No one ever said ghost hunting would be all sunshine and rainbows.

"Okay, let's open the doors," I nod toward Lucien to go ahead.

As he palmed the handle a wicked laugh echoed down the halls. There was a manic edge to it and even though it sounded like a child, something dark was twisting it and overlapping the small voice.

“That’s not ominous at all,” Eli said, the sarcasm dripping from his words as he glared down the hallway.

"That must be why we’re here," Jayce grimaced. "I thought Kassie said all the ghosts are nice."

I shrugged, "I knew there would be more to it. If you thought we were here for Casper, you can wait in the car."

"Rude, much?" Eli said with a raised eyebrow. All three of them were now looking at me like I’d lost my mind.

Whoops, I hadn’t meant to be a jerk.

I rubbed the back of my neck as my cheeks flushed, "Um, I think that laugh rubbed me the wrong way. Sorry."

"Don't worry, Rav, there is no telling if our powers transform with each spirit. Seems like I'm not the only one with emotion powers," Jayce reassured me, pulling me close to him. I loved that they were willing to take me at my worst and not hold it against me.
