“Here, I had some headache meds in my bag,” Jayce says as he slides me two of the pills. I happily swallow them down with the orange juice Lucien poured for me before doctoring up a cup of coffee.

No one speaks as we sip a fresh round of caffeine, and eat greasy bacon and french toast. When I finally feel more human, I finally bring up my idea.

“I think we should have a sleepover,” I start.

“You mean like we do every night?” Eli jokes. Clearly, he’s feeling better already. I flip him off before continuing.

“At the farm. We can bring some air mattresses or drag some down from upstairs. Bring our bedding, but stay up and see what we can find,” I finish. “More than just some quick moments.”

They all blink at me in confusion.

“Isn’t that what we’ll be doing once we move in?” Lucien points out.

“Yes, but I felt Pandora after this. And when we move in, shouldn’t it be after things are figured out? I don’t think I’ll feel safe there until we do. Jayce has got basic security, and things have been quiet, I think it’s time to do this. I feel it.”

It’s so hard to explain intuition to them. They would never laugh at me but it seems so crazy to be like ‘my gut is saying we need to go back.’

“Then we go tonight,” Lucien says simply. “I’ve got to go to work tomorrow but I can bring what I need over there and nap when I get home.”

“What should we bring?” Jayce asks, already pulling out his notebook he never leaves home without. “Protective charms, we have those already. Maybe we should consider a seance of some sort. There has to be a way to keep it neutral, right? Not letting dark entities through.”

“I’m sure there are. Sounds like a good research opportunity,” Eli says pointedly. It goes right over Jayce’s head as he makes a few more notes.

“If we can dig up some cameras for recording, and maybe our recording app for EVP, we might get something worthwhile. I’m not saying to walk the forest at night, just be on the land and ask the right questions. They both mentioned a man, we have to figure out who he is.”

They listen as I give them a word for word recount of the little chat I had with my uncle. That was enough to convince them this is the right path.

“There’s been nothing on our cameras, Jayce?” Lucien questions. Jayce shakes his head and pulls up the app to show them.

“No, they’re motion activated. Unless he’s a genius and already worked out our blind spots, no one has been back. Our coming and going at random is likely keeping us safe. They have to guess if we’ll find them and they want a low profile.”

“It also means whoever was responsible, is alive,” Eli agrees.

“It’s so fucked up to think this all happened over the last year or so. She wasn’t a kid, she was a sheltered adult,” I add quietly. “She didn’t deserve this and I feel like such a shitty cousin. I should have checked in more.”

“You were living your own life, Rav,” Jayce says gently. “It’s not like you could have known. He purposefully put distance between you all.”

“I just wish she would have reached out. I’d have helped her,” I whisper helplessly as the tears start to fall. Of all the things these powers brought on, I was both thankful and angry that they brought me here. Reliving the past and it being so close would haunt me for years after we lay Pandora to rest.

“Come on, let’s pack up and head out. We have a seance to prepare for,” Lucien prompts to get us moving. I’m glad that we have someone level-headed in our group. He keeps me going when all I want is to curl up into a ball some days.

I just hope tonight brings some answers.

Eli

The farm is quiet tonight and fog clings to the ground. The clouds obscure the moon, so we have to rely on what little light the land provides. Which consists of a porch light, a dim light on the back of the house, the flickering old lights in the barn, and nothing in the old section of the farm.

“I’d say it’s a good atmosphere for ghost hunting,” Jayce says as he swallows hard, glancing nervously around the kitchen. The man who used to be a skeptic and a bit wary of ghosts was no less unsettled now.

I’m downright terrified.

But I won’t tell Raven that.

The last thing I want is to get thrown into another horrifying vision without warning. My only consolation is knowing it might lead us to yet another clue. In the end, if they were murdered, their murderer would be the last vision.

Not exactly happy but could change the course of this entire investigation.

“I’m all set up!” Raven calls out. In any other situation, I might have laughed at the over the top candles in a circle on the table, but right now, I’m thankful for the protective sigils she carved on the table and the extra light.
