Considering I’m nearly consumed with the need for release, I begin to move again. “Thank you.” I pick up right where we left off and quicken the pace. A wave of ecstasy rises up to make my moans get louder as my climax builds.

“Feel me,” says Kai as he reaches between us to pinch my clit. White-hot pleasure spikes in me, and my orgasm shatters throughout my body. I might scream, but I can’t be sure because I’m not completely conscious as my werewolf manages to prolong the sensations until he comes too.

Kai clutches me to his chest as we slowly recover. He plucks a sweat-slicked piece of my hair from my cheek. “Now this is how I like your hair best.”

I chuckle, and I gaze into the eyes of the man I’ll spend the rest of my life with. “I love you, Kai.”

“I love you, too, Abby, my perfect match.”

I snuggle into him and inhale the scent of our combined musk. It sends tingles through me as my heart threatens to burst with the joy of finding my werewolf to cherish forever.

Chapter Eight

“Abby,” Charlie says as she walks into my office. A paper coffee cup thuds on my desk. “One double-shot latte with oat milk. I’d have brought you wine if I thought you’d drink on the job.”

“Wine?”

“I know what happened between Kai and Kevin.”

“Oh boy.” I inhale deeply and then blow out the air slowly. “Sit.” I grab the coffee and gulp some down.

“When Kevin first proposed Life Shift to the clan, Kai was dead set against bringing humans into the pack. He challenged Kevin as beta. Apparently, when this happened, Kevin was wearing the scarf you knit him. When Kai got close enough to scent you, he lost his mind. He shifted and went after Kevin.”

“Oh no.” I think about how Kai could have seriously injured an older and not nearly as big Kevin.

“Yeah,” Charlie says. “Pack members restrained him, but Kevin—” She shakes her head. “Werewolves are werewolves, and Kevin pissed Kai off more when he pointed out that he must be in a jealous rage over his human mate. You can imagine how that went. Ryan said if a bunch of them hadn’t jumped in, Kevin might not be beta or…”

“Jeez.” My stomach drops. Would Kai have killed the man?

“Kevin wanted Kai kicked out of the pack for the disrespect. But Patrick, the alpha, convinced Kevin that forcing Kai to be with his human mate was a better punishment. Ryan thinks it’s because they need as many children as they can get to keep up the pack.”

“So Kai didn’t want me as a mate.” I recall how angry Kai appeared when we first met.

She nods. “But you know how mate attraction works.”

“I do.”

“It gets worse.”

“Really, Charlie? Because finding out I’m a punishment is pretty bad on its own.”

Charlie leans across my desk to take my hand. Her grip is strong, and I wonder if she thinks she’ll have to restrain me. “Kai used to be a hacker. Like the almost-went-to-jail kind.”

I gasp as a vision of Kai in an orange jumpsuit flashes in my mind. “What?”

“Ryan says he had a tough…”

I don’t hear the rest of what Charlie says because now I know how our tiny little program in a small town managed to be compromised. How convenient that it was only Kai’s profile that was a problem. Anger burns in my belly, and pain radiates through my hand when I slam it down. “Damn it!” I get up to pace my office, and Charlie is no longer speaking. My skin begins to crawl with the thought I just spent the last few days with a criminal in my bed. “I married him.”

Charlie is behind me. “I know, Abby.”

I turn to her as my reality crashes around me. My perfect match does more than break the rules. “I’m married to a man who breaks the law. Laws big enough he was almost sent to prison.” I clench my teeth as I think about what he might have done to Kevin if he hadn’t been stopped. “He’s a potential killer!”

“I wouldn’t say that, Abby.”

I glare at my friend, who seems to be defending Kai. “You aren’t telling me this is okay.”

“No. Of course not, but Kai does what he does because he doesn’t like authority. When he’s forced to follow orders he disagrees with, he rebels.”
