Her eyes flash with vicious fire. “I belong to no one.”

So this girl has the same spirit as my Princess. It might be dangerous for the two of them to live here together. With their quick minds and determination, they might figure out a way to escape their fate, after all.

Perhaps I won’t leave my captive here overnight. But I will bring her here for a meal, at least.

“Save some of the food for the Princess.” I leap into the air, skimming over the barrier and mounting into the sky.

Morning light fills the cave when I return. The rays don’t reach the nest, but the soft glow illuminates the Princess as she lies there on her side, relaxed, one of her long legs draped over the other. I like the arch of her hip, the way her body dips down to her waist, then rises again to her shoulder. Peace smooths her brow, which is so often puckered with anger when she’s awake. Her lips are plush and pink.

Mine.

The word is involuntary, and I revolt against it. She is not mine. I refuse to accept her as mine. When she and the others are transformed, I will neither dance for her nor surrender my body to her.

A dragon may couple with any willing partner during the heat, whether he chooses them as a life-mate or not. But I prefer my first coupling to be with someone I respect and trust. A strong, worthy warrior like Mordessa. Not this demanding princess who wishes she had been born as a farm girl. Not this perceptive woman who cuts so deeply with her words.

“Wake up!” My command is almost a roar, and the Princess nearly jumps out of her skin. She startles upright, her yellow hair sticking out in clumps, her blue eyes huge and stunned.

“Shit!” she exclaims. “What is wrong with you?”

Something warm expands inside me, swelling into a deep chuckle. Not a chuckle—a full laugh that rolls out between my jaws.

“You idiot,” she gasps. “You scared me on purpose. Just for that, I’m peeing on the nest again.”

“Do that, and I won’t take you to breakfast.”

Her interest is piqued. I almost laugh again at the look of curious hunger on her face.

“Go away for a few minutes while I take care of certain needs,” she says. “I’ll do it properly, not in the nest.”

“Perhaps I should watch you to be sure.”

“No.”

I leave for a short flight, gliding up into the bright morning air and wheeling around half a dozen times before descending again.

When I return, the Princess has straightened her scraps of clothing, put on her slippers, and smoothed her hair. “I’m ready.”

I lie down on the floor of the cave. “Climb up.”

“Really?” She eyes me doubtfully.

“I won’t offer again.”

She climbs onto my back, settling herself between two of my spikes. Her light, warm weight, the squeeze of her legs around the base of my neck, the knowledge that her sensitive parts are pressed against my scales—it affects me as deeply as I feared it would. To distract myself from my cock and its immediate response, I begin repeating her cruel words in my mind.

I think you’re quite possibly the worst ruler your clan has ever had. Getting them involved in a war, getting half of them killed, and forcing them to become the monstrous kidnappers of helpless women. You have failed them. And the deaths of the female dragons—that’s all your fault.

It does the trick, softening the urgency of the thrills running through my belly. Still, it’s best to keep this flight short.

“Hold on,” I tell her, and I dive, heading straight for the ground.

The Princess grabs two of my spikes and shrieks as we plunge down. When I level out, right before crashing into the earth, she gasps and yanks on my spikes like a human rider jerking the reins of a restive horse.

“Stop it,” I snarl.

“Then stop scaring me on purpose.”

“I always fly this way.”
