At the time, in ancient history, mortals were nothing but ants to the old gods, often mistreated, used, dismissed. Many of the demigods were the product of rape rather than love. At the start of this era, the demigods banded together in defense of their mortal parents, forming a force the gods couldn’t match. The demigods were more numerous than full-blooded immortals, simply because mortals reproduce with more ease.

Had Mara-Rhea or Velenor joined the fight, it might have gone another way, but neither of them interfered, so the gods were banished to a land where they could no longer affect mortal lives.

Demigods were given a choice between living on one side of the border or the next. Many opted to stay in the mortal kingdoms, and others came here, to become the peasants, the servants, the bulk of the realms.

I’ve always considered myself one of them. A common descendant of a scion, with some long-forgotten divine ancestry no longer relevant.

Now, Doryn calls me something else, and sounds quite certain of himself, too. My first instinct is to deny everything out of his mouth, but I don’t think the king enters many bargains without knowing the outcome.

Could I truly be some sort of creature I’ve never heard about until today? Something feeding on sex, of all things? That’s preposterous. I don’t evenlike sex.

At least, I didn’t.

We return to the royal apartment in silence, and I’m surprised he takes me back to my rooms. The doors leading out to the balcony are wide open. I can still hear the music, the laughter, and smell the wine and lust from below in the garden.

“How come it’s not cold in here?” I wonder, bracing myself as Doryn takes me to the edge of my bed.

I don’t know what he’s up to this time. The fact that I’ll end up naked and full of his seed is a given, but the last day has proven that he enjoys varying how he goes about it.

Leaving me to sit on the plush mattress, he walks to the balcony, crossing his hands behind his back as he looks at his court below. “Elementals are in charge of maintaining the temperature in the keep. I don’t concern myself with the hows.”

Elementals? He haselementalsas part of his staff. Those with such a strong power are titled lords where I’m from, not servants, even to a king. What is Nyxar? It doesn’t make any sense at all. Full-blooded immortals as servants and women at the head of armies. Every time I expect something, he throws a curveball.

I clear my throat. “How do you plan to prove your speculation about my nature?”

Doryn glances at me behind his shoulder and smirk. “So eager.”

My bedroom door reopens and the entire circle spills through it, including the oldfriendwho makes my blood boil just by breathing the same air as me.

Lying, spying, that’s one thing, but faking a friendship? Making me care for him? I’ll never forgive him.

“I make no speculation. You are a succubus, and that’s a fact. Unfamiliar as you are with the very notion, I do understand it needs to be proven to you unequivocally. So, we will.” He turns to face me again, eyes bright in the moonlight, and that beautiful mouth curves into that cruel smile again.

Whatever he plans, I’m going to regret making this deal, I can tell.

“I’m afraid it might sting a little, darling Rhea.”

CALDORYN

I tell myself I’m not enjoying seeking her squirm when I retrieve the smallest dagger attached to my belt—the one she used to stab me. This is not revenge. But I can’t deny this development pleases me. The sudden uncomfortable stiffness in my breeches suggests as much.

“Don’t move,” I warn.

Naturally, she crawls back on her bed to get away from me.

Yes, I am not disappointed by this turn at all. I give chase, and she sets out at a run. My cock twitches as I follow, slowly, not letting myself use any power, forcing my muscles to hold back, to avoid ruining the fun so soon.

Unconcerned, my circle makes themselves at home in the elegant chamber. It’s not unlike my own room, if a little smaller. They sit in her boudoir, between the bathroom and the bedroom, in full view of us, but ignoring our chase.

Silver produces a pack of playing cards and deals everyone in.

When Rhea gets too close to the door, I end the game, catching her. I pin her against the nearest wall, loving how she heaves and pants.

I could have reassured her, telling her I wouldn’t hurt her very much, but I owe her a fair dose of fear along with pain. Besides, making her understand just how weak she is right now is helpful.

“Shhh,” I whisper, running the edge of her blade along her skin, starting at her cheek.
