“I can’t,” I sob, my insides contracting. “I can’t, I’m going to come!”

“Not without me, you won’t,” the bastard roars. “You’re going to do as you’re fucking told for once in your life andwait.”

I’m so, so, so close. I whimper into the blanket. It’s a miracle I don’t shatter around him, as he gets impossibly faster, each thrust hitting a spot so raw and battered and exquisite inside me.

“Now,” Ryther finally orders.

I lose it.

I don’t only come, I drench the sheets, his legs, and his cock, with an ear-piercing scream that likely has the neighbors wondering if someone is getting murdered.

Yeah. I’m in so much fucking shit.

CHAPTER FORTY-ONE

THREE THINGS I DIDN’T NEED TO KNOW

Ryther

This time, I watch her sleep, seated at the foot of the bed. I ought to rest myself, but if I lie down next to her, what will happen won’t be restful for either of us.

I knew I was making a mistake the moment I sank into that sweet ass, but I can’t bring myself to regret it. How could I? The way we fit isn’t normal. It’s not natural. I’ve fucked a million holes or more, and none made me this wild, reducing me to nothing but a beast desperate to rut.

The fact that I shouldn’t have touched her is irrelevant. I did, and the future where I would have remained completely detached about her is gone, if it ever existed.

When I sense Caenan’s approach, I regretfully get to my feet and make my way out of the room.

“Most lords gave up for the night. I’d say a good half of them are still in the woods. The others came to camp to rest.” He frowns, nostrils flaring.

I lift my chin, saying nothing. I don’t have any reason to hide Darina’s presence from him, but I need to know whether he can detect her himself.

“She’s here, then.”

I sigh. I should have bathed. And I would have if I could drag myself out of the room before.

There’s no doubt that I stink of me, her, and sex.

“Do you smell her in the house or just on me?”

“On you, mostly. But I’ve been close to her; the lords wouldn’t be as familiar with her scent.”

Well, that’s that, then. No one else will be permitted within these walls until this is over.

I start to walk to the bathroom, and his step falls in line with mine unprompted. “If I order you to guard her again, can you actually do it this time?”

He winces. “If you’re asking me whether I can protect her if someone comes at her with a sword, the answer’s yes. If you’re asking me to babysit her, tell her what she should and shouldn’t do, find someone else.”

I appreciate his honesty. In truth, I’m guessing only fewwouldfeel comfortable at the idea of ordering Darina Thorn around. It goes beyond the fact that she’s rather endearing; she was meant to rule us, not the other way around. Her voice, her words, the way she holds herself, demands authority. The more confident she gets, the more commanding and regal she will be. Just yesterday, she got a taste of that power when she demanded Valdred and I kneel She took it back fast, scared of the implication. But she knows it’s there.

“Guarding her is the most important thing right now. From Junis, especially—he cannot be alone around her, or even close to her.”

Caenan nods stiffly, as we reach the passageway, and clears his throat. “What you said earlier…about the heart of the Hollow.” He chances a glimpse behind his shoulder, not finishing the sentence.

“Those orders are valid until I say otherwise.”

He blinks, clearly surprised. “Why?”

Why, indeed.
