“The curse?”

“Yes. There’s a curse in one of the books that someone annotated. It seems to fit the demon’s situation.”

“Witches annotate curses?”

“Only the anal ones.”

My pulse raced. “How quickly can you meet me at the lake?”

“I need a little time to gather the ingredients to break it, but I should be able to acquire everything.”

“A little time as in two days or two hours?”

“Two hours.”

“Then I’ll see you there in two hours,” I said and hung up.

“You have the gala,” Nana Pratt interrupted.

I whirled around to face her. “I thought you were making the tea.”

“It’s brewing. You can’t possibly go breaking curses now. What will you do if the demon attacks you?”

I raced upstairs to my bedroom. “What I always do. Defend myself.”

“You’ll need to rewash and style your hair,” the ghost chided as she trailed behind me.

I unlocked my weapons trunk and pondered the best options to keep the demon at bay. The escrima sticks would be good for blocking and poking, although not impervious to fire. I removed them from the trunk and set them aside.

“Why not the double-sided axe?” Ray asked.

“I’m choosing defensive weapons. I only want to keep the demon from killing me.”

“Why not kill her?”

Still in a crouched position, I turned to regard the ghost. “When have you known me to kill for the hell of it?”

“You’d be ridding the world of a dangerous monster responsible for the deaths of dozens of innocent people,” Nana Pratt interrupted.

I zeroed in on her. “So you do think it’s acceptable to kill sometimes, just like Gun and Cam.”

She glanced away.

“To our knowledge, the kulshedra wasn’t killing anyone until she was trapped in the lake,” I continued. “The problems she caused at Bridger farm involved livestock and crops.”

“That justifies the lives the creature has taken since then? That’s like saying murder is okay if you’re already in prison for grand larceny.”

He made a good point. “I’ll take throwing knives and a sword, too. How’s that?”

“The demon already murdered a lot of people, Lorelei. I don’t want you to be one of them.”

“Ray’s right. You don’t want to miss the opportunity to wear that pretty dress.”

I hopped to my feet. “Not a person, remember?”

“You said you’re a goddess in a human body born to a human family. That makes you as much of a person as Ingrid and me. Just because you have godly gifts doesn’t make you indestructible.”

“You don’t need to worry about me, Ray. Phaedra’s a talented witch. She and I can handle this.”
