“Why don’t you call your boyfriend for backup? He’s got an arm that turns into a flaming sword, or he can turn into that scary monster. Alicia said he’s terrifying.”

“Kane is not my boyfriend, and I don’t need backup.”

“Why not?” Ray asked.

“Because I have managed my own affairs for my entire adult life…”

“Not the backup,” Ray interrupted. “Why isn’t he your boyfriend?”

I felt the tension creep through my body, tightening muscles that I needed loose for the lake.

My phone rang again. No rest for the insanely busy.

“Hello?”

“Lorelei, this is Sarah Peele.”

I closed my eyes and swallowed a groan.

“Wendy would very much like to meet her family.”

I glanced at the weapons spread around me. “Now?”

“If that’s all right with you. Is Sian with you now? Because I can drive her over.”

I released a breath. “Yes, of course it’s all right. It’s actually good timing because Sian’s mother is also here.”

Dead silence greeted my statement.

“Sarah?”

“I thought she was on her deathbed.”

“It’s a bit more complicated than that, but it means Wendy can meet them both right here on Fairhaven soil.”

“Yes, I suppose that’s a plus. What’s your address?”

“Bluebeard’s Castle.”

“You’re joking. You’re the crazy lady who bought that money pit?”

“Señorita Loco at your service.” In so many ways.

I hung up and called Phaedra with an update. The kulshedra would have to wait.

Sarah opted to wait in the car outside the gate and sent Wendy alone to the Castle. Sian and his mother decided to meet her in the adjacent cemetery for privacy. I didn’t have the heart to tell them there was no such thing with Nana Pratt and Ray around.

I paced the foyer, glancing outside every so often to make sure Sarah didn’t come tearing up the walkway on the fumes of fear and regret.

Nana Pratt poked her head through the wall. “It’s going well so far.”

“No one’s upset or angry?”

“No. Wendy is showing them pictures on her phone that she’s drawn and they’re making the appropriate noises.”

My hands fidgeted. “Should I say hello or leave them alone?”

“I think it might be goodbye. Sian is talking about heading back to Faerie with his mother.”
