“A work event that doesn’t involve a paycheck doesn’t seem right,” Ray said.

“Especially for someone like you who needs money, Lorelei,” Nana Pratt chimed in.

Kane couldn’t seem to tear his eyes off the dress. “Your trip to the city was worth it, I see.”

I didn’t tell him about my encounter with the Fates. There was too much to unpack yet.

I spread my arms wide to give him a better view. “You like the dress?”

His eyes sparked with mischief. “It’s the body underneath that interests me more.”

I urged him downstairs. “Let’s go before you forget why we’re doing this in the first place.”

He snaked an arm along my waist. Luckily, I’d been prepping myself all day in anticipation of his touch. There’d be no accidental trips down his memory lane tonight if I could help it.

“We’re going to dance the night away, isn’t that it?”

I swatted his hand away. “No. This is purely professional.”

“What about us?” Nana Pratt called after me. “Are we coming?”

I stopped at the front door and swiveled to face the ghosts. “I command you both to attend the gala with me this evening.”

Kane’s eyes widened. “What are you doing?”

“Bringing reinforcements.”

“Is that wise?”

“We need more eyes and ears than we have. No one will know they’re in the room.”

“I thought they were anchored to this property.”

“They are, unless I choose to untether them, which I have for tonight.”

Kane stared at me. “Now I’m wondering what else you can do that you haven’t told me.”

I gave him a demure look. “So many things,” I whispered.

Kane placed his hand on the small of my back and guided me out the door. “And I can’t wait to experience each and every one of them for myself.”

“If you’re going to flirt like this the whole night, I’m definitely going to eavesdrop on other people,” Ray grumbled.

Kane escorted me across the bridge and through the gate to a sleek silver car. The passenger door opened automatically, revealing a glowing blue interior.

“You didn’t have to spring for a rental just for this,” I said.

“It isn’t a rental. It’s a concept car.”

“I thought those never actually got made.”

Kane’s mouth split in a self-satisfied grin. “They do for me.”

Nana Pratt contemplated the strange car. “How does this work for us? Should we get in, too?”

“Yes, you’re basically the barnacles to my whale until we’re safely inside the compound.”

Kane’s eyebrows lifted. “Did you just liken yourself to a whale?”
