“I’ll go eavesdrop on those folks near the stage,” Ray offered.

“Good luck,” I said. I caught sight of the host across the room, chatting with a group of men in tuxedos. “Do you think all these people are potential investors?”

“No, I think some of them are here to influence the decisions of potential investors.” Kane inclined his head toward two women in skimpy dresses that barely covered their backsides. “I recognize those succubi from the club.”

One of the succubi noticed him and blew him a kiss.

Magnarella spotted me and lifted a glass in greeting. Even from this distance, I could distinguish blood from a Cabernet. If he was drinking openly, then that meant everyone in this ballroom had knowledge of the hidden world. Made sense. It was unlikely a god elixir would be funded by the average human, no matter how deep their pockets. Unless they agreed to be silent investors, any potential investors would want updates on the progress of the project. There was no getting around the supernatural aspect of it.

Magnarella downed his drink and placed the empty glass on a passing tray, never taking his eyes off me.

Kane’s grip on my waist tightened. “Let’s dance before the night is ruined by our host.”

“I think we should circulate. That’s the reason we’re here, remember?”

His eyes locked on me. “Yes,” he said distractedly. “Of course.”

“Miss Clay and Mr. Sullivan,” Magnarella’s voice carried across the ballroom as he advanced toward us. “I am so pleased to have you with us this evening.”

There was no avoiding the vampire now.

I flashed a bright smile. “Wouldn’t miss it. A promise is a promise.”

He snapped his fingers and a server appeared beside us. “My special guests require refreshments.”

“After we work up our thirst on the dance floor.” Kane spirited me away before the vampire could say another word.

“We should’ve asked questions while we had his full attention,” I hissed over the sound of the music.

Kane kept one hand draped along my waist and slid his other hand into mine. “Do you really believe he would tell us anything valuable? The only information we’ll learn here tonight is from unsuspecting guests.”

True.

“They play this piece beautifully,” I said, casting a glance at the orchestra.

“Chopin?”

“Beethoven. ‘Violin Romance no. 2 in F Major.’”

His head tilted as he gazed at me.

“What? Is it my eyeliner? I knew it was too smoky.”

“I didn’t notice your eyeliner. I was too busy admiring your eyes.” He seemed to catch himself and retreated from the compliment. “I heard you’re the one who subdued the wolves at Sage’s house.”

“Only one wolf. The leader.” I suddenly became painfully aware of the short distance between his mouth and mine.

“Risky, wasn’t it? Using your powers in front of others.”

“I only wanted to de-escalate the situation before anyone was killed, which I did. The only ones who know what really happened are West and Jax.”

Kane flinched. “West knows?”

“It was necessary.”

The other guests blurred around us as we continued to dance.

“How did it feel?”
