I turned abruptly. “West?”

“What? You’re the only ones allowed to collect intel?” The alpha stuffed a bacon-wrapped scallop into his mouth.

“Did you sneak in?” I asked.

“I’ll try not to be insulted. A surprise invitation showed up at the trailer park. Figured it was a sign that someone wanted me involved.”

Over his shoulder, I spotted Sage as she emerged from the restroom. She looked resplendent in a green dress that cinched at the waist. The skirt billowed like a forest canopy.

“I take it you’re the only Arrowhead here,” I said. There was no chance he would’ve brought Sage as his date otherwise.

“I’m keeping this event low-key,” he replied. “I didn’t want anyone getting worked up for nothing.”

“Uh-huh.” I smiled. “Hi, Sage. You look pretty tonight.”

Sage linked her arm through his. “Lorelei! It’s so great to see you. Are you here alone?”

“I’m with Kane. We’re conducting a little investigation.”

“I didn’t think you were here for the drinks.” She pulled a face. “Steer clear of the blood bar in the VIP lounge. They’re offering body shots. I’ll leave the rest to your imagination.”

My gaze swept the room. “Have you learned anything useful so far?”

West raised the glass of beer to his lips. “Based on that ice sculpture, I’d say Magnarella thinks very highly of himself.”

“I said useful.”

West took a swig. “He’s desperate for cash.”

Sage glanced at him. “What makes you think that? Look at this gala. The food alone probably costs more than Gran and I spend in a year on food.”

“Exactly,” West said. “He’s showing off because he wants to convince the investors he’s successful—a sure bet.”

“Losing his financial support had to be a huge blow to his bottom line,” I added.

West rubbed his thumb along the outside of his glass. “It’s brave of you to be here, Clay.”

“Should I mark this day down on my calendar for posterity?”

“This has to be like walking into the lion’s den for you.”

“More like a hyena’s, but I take your point.”

West looked past me. “I see your buddy Sullivan doing what he does best.”

I pivoted to see the demon dancing with the two succubi we’d seen earlier.

“He has his reasons,” I said, ignoring the twitch of muscle next to my right eye.

“And I can see four of those reasons from here,” Sage remarked with a sigh. “My boobs do not look that good without the help of a bra.”

I tapped West’s foot with my own. “This is the part where you’re supposed to compliment her.”

He waved his hand. “I value my life. I don’t weigh in on discussions about body parts.”

Sage kissed his cheek. “You’re a smart man, Weston Davies.”

Kane noticed me in the company of the werewolf and quickly extracted himself from the succubi.
