“You two should take the opportunity to dance,” I said. “Say what you want about Magnarella, but the music is excellent.”

Sage smiled up at West as he twirled her onto the dance floor. I intercepted Kane by the ice sculpture, which I now realized displayed Magnarella, not in a business suit, but in his birthday suit. Delightful.

I quickly averted my gaze. “Did you notice he modeled the ice sculpture after Michelangelo’s David?”

Kane kept his attention firmly on me. “I’m trying not to notice any details, no matter how small.”

I smiled. “You look like you were enjoying yourself.”

“The succubi were very informative.”

“Is that so? And what did you have to offer in exchange?”

I didn’t hear his response. I was too distracted by the image of Sage barreling toward me. Her hair had fallen loose from its updo, and mascara bled from her eyes.

I practically shoved Kane out of the way to reach her. “Sage, what is it? Where’s West?”

She gripped my arms, struggling to catch her breath, and I steeled myself against the chaotic state of her mind.

“They took him. Dragged him off the dance floor. Nobody even tried to stop them.”

“Who took him?” I caught sight of Magnarella across the room, deep in conversation with a small group. Of course, the vampire rarely did his own dirty work.

“Wolves.” She sucked in a breath. “Three of them.”

Wolves? Since when did vampires work with wolves?

“Which way?” Kane demanded.

Sage released her hold on my arms. “Follow me.”

We hurried along the perimeter of the room. I prayed we didn’t attract any attention.

“What’s the rush?” Ray asked, appearing beside me. “Are we done?”

“West is in trouble. Stay here and keep eavesdropping. I’ll meet you at home.”

“We can be somewhere outside the Castle grounds without you?”

“Of course you can, as long as I will it. You and Nana Pratt will stay here until guests start to leave, then you’ll go home.”

“We don’t need a car?”

I suppressed a laugh. “The Castle is your anchor. You’ll get snapped back there. No transportation required.”

“Ooh, I’m interested to see how this goes.” His form dissipated.

I hurried to keep up with Kane’s long strides and Sage’s frantic pace. We rounded a corner to a corridor with a single door marked ‘Staff Exit.’

Sage pushed open the door, and we spilled into the night. Now would’ve been a good time for a La Fortuna mage to turn up. Between Gun and Cam, one of them would be able to identify the guilty vehicle. Unfortunately, we were on our own.

“Miss, wait!”

I whirled around to see a security guard chasing after us. It was only when I spotted the familiar dagger in his hand that I realized which guard it was.

He offered me the handle. “I thought you might need this.”

“Thanks.”
