Sage stared at the parking lot in anguish.

The guard pointed to the open gate. “I saw a white van drive away a minute ago. Thought you’d want to know.”

“Did you happen to notice which way it turned?”

“Left.”

“Thanks.”

He adjusted his collar. “The name’s Chaz.”

“Thanks, Chaz.”

They were headed for the interstate, the highway north of Fairhaven. That road traveled east-west.

“They’re taking West back to Minnesota,” I said.

Sage’s face radiated despair. “Why wouldn’t they just kill him? Why kidnap him?”

“Because their alpha plans to strike the final blow in front of the whole pack,” I said. “It’s a show of strength.”

“And dominance,” Kane added.

“Please help him,” she pleaded. The agony in her voice stoked a fire in the pit of my stomach.

I turned to Kane. “Do the bird thing.”

“The bird thing?”

“Shift into a blackbird and track them from the air. They’ll never suspect it.”

“Then what? Fly all the way to Minnesota?”

I held out my hand. “Key.”

The demon slapped a key in the palm of my hand.

“Now go!” I didn’t wait to watch him shift. I sprinted to the car with Sage right behind me.

“What are we doing?” she panted.

“Not we, me,” I corrected her. “You drive home and stay with Gran. West will kill me if anything happens to you.”

The figure of a vampire sliced through the shadows, along with two of his henchmen. The three bodies blocked our path to the car.

“Yes, Miss Clay,” the vampire said. “An excellent question. What are you doing?”

“This isn’t about you. I need to help a friend.”

“Do you mean the werewolves from Minnesota?” He was so proud of himself; he could barely contain his glee. “I was aware there was a history between their pack and Mr. Davies, but I had no idea they intended to do him harm.”

“Asshole!” Sage advanced toward the vampire. I sidestepped to prevent her from reaching him. Magnarella would snap her delicate neck without a second thought.

“Funny, you don’t look like a werewolf.” He sniffed the air. “You don’t smell like one either.”

“I don’t need to be a werewolf in order to care about West,” Sage shot back.

“Why did you help them?” I asked. “Their beef has nothing to do with you.”
