“No, but I saw an opportunity for leverage, and I seized it with both hands.”

“Leverage,” I echoed.

Magnarella held up his phone. “Agree to our partnership, sign the contract, and your friend Mr. Davies will be released. No harm done.”

“You can’t promise that. His old pack is determined to wipe out his line for their own peace of mind. They’ll never release him, no matter what they promised you.”

I had to get to the car, or I’d never catch up to the van in time, even if Kane was able to track it.

“I suppose that’s a risk you’ll have to take.” The vampire waved the phone at me. “I need an answer, Miss Clay. My lawyers are waiting inside with the necessary paperwork.”

Sage’s hand dipped into her dress.

“Your dress has pockets?” Why hadn’t the Fates thought of that?

“Run!” Sage shouted, pulling a small vial from the enviable pocket. She released a green liquid in the air.

I ran.

I hit the button on the key and watched the door rise. By the time it was completely open, I was already behind the wheel. I had yet to drive an electric car, but there was a first time for everything.

I sped out of the lot, wheels sliding, and blasted past the confused guard at the gate. I prayed that whatever potion Sage used on Magnarella and his goons, she’d given herself ample time to escape.

CHAPTER 20

Iignored the pompous robo-voice in the car that insisted on telling me how much I was currently exceeding the speed limit. Unless I saw flashing red lights in the rearview mirror en route to saving West’s ass, I didn’t much care.

Up ahead, I spotted a white van on the side of the road. Two of the doors were wide open.

Shit.

I pulled alongside the van and peered inside. No sign of its occupants.

The silhouette of a large bird drew my attention to the forest. Its wings closed as it sailed to the ground, morphing into the prince of hell as it landed.

“They’re gone,” I said.

“West broke out of the van and headed into the woods,” Kane explained. “The others are tracking him.”

West was running for his life, and the other wolves were running to take it. At least West had the home court advantage. He knew Wild Acres better than almost anybody.

“Then I guess we’d better hurry.” I ducked back into the car to retrieve my weapons.

“Not that I won’t enjoy the show, but how do you expect to run through the woods in that dress?”

He was right. Aside from the obvious challenges, I’d twinkle like the lone star in a sky of darkness. As much as it pained me, I had to ditch the dress.

The heels were the first to go. I was surprised I’d managed to make it this far without blisters. That was adrenaline for you. I shimmied out of the dress, giving Kane quite a shock until he realized I’d worn a nude bodysuit underneath.

“Here, take my jacket. It’s too cold for that.” He removed his suit jacket and helped me into it.

“Ever the gentleman, even in a crisis,” I said.

“Just try not to get blood on it. It’s vintage.”

“No promises.”

I sprinted into the woods, searching for large paw prints. They were easy to spot in the dirt. Their path was even easier to see thanks to the messy trail. There were broken branches and crushed bushes all along the route.
