The spirits would have to wait.

CHAPTER 5

“Gary, you’re a sight for sore eyes.” I’d never been happier to see the inside of my truck. There was no tourniquet in the first aid kit, so I grabbed a spare shirt and wrapped it around my lower leg to stop the bleeding. Then I reversed the truck out of the dirt lane and hit the gas. Chief Garcia was right about Bone Lake; it was a no-go zone.

In light of my impromptu meetup with the three-headed monster, my first call was to West. If that creature devoured Anna’s attackers, this wasn’t a case for the police.

The sound of a gruff female voice on the end of the line caught me off guard. “Anna?”

“That’s right. Who’s this?”

“Lorelei Clay. I thought I called West.”

“You did. The alpha is otherwise engaged at the moment. He asked me to screen his calls.”

“Does he usually ask you to do that?”

“No, but he’s waiting for a call from his lawyer, and he doesn’t want to miss it.”

“How are you feeling?”

“Why do you care?”

I could practically hear her scowl. “You weren’t in great shape when I saw you. It seemed polite to ask.”

“I’m fine. Only a few scratches.”

“I guess it’s a good thing you answered. I have news for you. I think your assailants might’ve been eaten by a monster.”

A long stretch of silence greeted my declaration.

“Hello?” I prompted.

“What makes you say that?” Her voice was uncharacteristically quiet.

“I went to Bone Lake today to see if your attackers were camping there. I found a lighter, and there was evidence of a fight.”

“What kind of evidence?”

“Blood, and a giant three-headed dragon monster.”

“Right.” She didn’t sound particularly surprised.

“Do you know about the monster?”

“I know about Bone Lake, and you’re right. The wolves were there, but not anymore.”

Something in her tone unsettled me. “Because you tossed them in the water?”

“No, because they ran off. The lighter is mine.”

Okay, I didn’t see that coming. “Yours?”

“Didn’t you see my initials? They’re engraved on the side.”

I dug the lighter from my pocket and flipped it over. Sure enough, the initials A.D. were etched in the metal. Some fake detective I was.

“Your blood, too?”
