“I wouldn’t have, had I known about the crossroads.”

“I, for one, am glad you did.” Kane pulled outside the gate to the Castle. “Want company?”

“I’m sure you have work to do. Won’t the club be opening soon?”

“Josie can manage.”

“So can I.” I opened the passenger door. “I’m not a helpless kitten, Kane. I can take care of myself.”

“Except when you’ve been kidnapped by a deranged vampire and done something to your leg that requires a bandage.”

“I had a plan. I would’ve escaped in my own time.” Right after I’d inhaled the remainder of the cheeseboard.

The demon smiled. “You can just say thank you, you know.”

“Thank you,” I said and shut the door. He looked far too smug. I began to wish Otto had called someone else.

I strode through the gate and across the bridge, fully conscious of Kane’s eyes on me the entire route to the front door. He waited until I entered the house to drive away.

Nana Pratt greeted me in the foyer. “Was that Kane who dropped you off? Did you two have a lovers quarrel?”

“Nana, rules!”

“I’m sorry. You were gone a long time. Ray and I were concerned.”

My shoulders relaxed. “You don’t need to worry about me.”

“I looked out earlier and saw your truck, but then you didn’t come in.”

“Someone else drove my truck as a favor.” And I hoped it was Heidi because Otto had no business driving at all.

“Are you hungry? I roasted the chicken you had in the fridge. I figured you could have it tomorrow.”

I scented the air. “You used rosemary?”

“And thyme. I hope you don’t mind.”

Part of me wanted to chastise her for breaking the rules, but the hungry and tired part of me opted to let it go.

“Thank you. That was very kind.”

“Ray and I are grateful to you. If it weren’t for you, we’d be in the afterlife without access to our families.” Her hands fidgeted. “Speaking of which…”

I sighed. “You want me to check on Steven and Ashley.”

“When you have time, of course. Maybe after a nice meal, if you’re still hungry?” she asked in a hopeful tone.

“I’ll text them.” A phone call was a bridge too far at the moment, but I could handle a simple text message.

Nana Pratt looked ready to dissolve into tears. “Thank you, Lorelei. It means the world to me.”

CHAPTER 7

Islept ten hours straight. If it weren’t for the ward startling me awake, I would’ve slept even longer.

I sat up and rubbed my arm. The sensation wasn’t painful, more like gentle pins and needles.

I looked down at my sweatpants and Eagles T-shirt. This was as presentable as I was willing to get right now.
