Good grief. I’d have to ask Kane for a detailed map because if I died soon, I was going straight to hell.

“It isn’t your fault, Sian. I’m sorry I don’t have anything to report yet. I know you’re anxious to find her.”

The microwave beeped, and I set the plate on the table in front of Sian. “One of the few things I missed when I lived in London was real pizza.”

He examined the triangle. “An interesting combination.”

I sat across from him. “Tell me about your realm.”

“Fairie is a place full of wonders. The colors are so vivid compared to here.” He seemed to realize the insult. “But it has its downsides, of course. No place is perfect.”

“Like what?”

“There are many rules to follow and court squabbles. I’d love to travel more, but Mother prefers I stay with her.” He took a generous bite of the pizza, and I watched his eyes roll back in his head. Another convert.

“I’m sure she worries about you. That’s what mothers do.”

A ping sound startled me. At first I thought it was my phone, until I saw Sian withdraw one from his pocket. “Will you excuse me for a moment?” He left the kitchen to answer the call.

I strained to listen from the kitchen.

“I am perfectly fine, Mother. There is no need to worry.” He paused. “It matters not where I am. You rest, and I shall be with you again soon.” He heaved a sigh. “Please do not call anyone. I am not with the Unseelie court. You know I have not spoken to her in years. I swore an oath.”

I busied myself with a glass of water when Sian returned to the kitchen.

“I apologize for my rudeness.”

“Sounds like your mother is worried about you.”

He smiled. “She would worry about me even if I were wrapped in cotton wool and stowed away in a tall tower that adjoined her house.”

“Must be nice, though, to have a parent who cares that much.” I had no idea what kind of parents mine would’ve been. They never had the chance to find out either.

“Mother can be a bit overprotective. I am an adult now. I make my own decisions.”

“Sounds like you had a relationship she didn’t approve of.”

“There was a particular fairy princess…” He glanced away. “It is all in the past.”

“Because she’s Unseelie?”

“I would say yes, except Mother has not been keen on any of my potential mates.”

“Some mothers are like that with their sons. No woman is good enough for her perfect boy.” I shrugged. “Usually those guys are the worst, but you don’t seem so bad. You mentioned an uncle. Do you come from a large family?”

“A large extended family. I have more aunts and uncles than I care to count, and it seems all they do is bicker.” He glanced airily around the kitchen. “It is so quiet and peaceful here in comparison.”

I smirked. “Depends on the day.”

“Did you inherit this house?”

“No, I bought it online last year.”

He nearly spat out his pizza.

“You’re actually the first person who hasn’t commented on the sorry state of the place.”

“Sorry state? This house is remarkable. I can absolutely see the potential.”
