Kane’s frown lines deepened. “Something doesn’t add up.”

“You’re overreacting.”

“I am biologically incapable of overreacting.”

I barked a laugh. “Because you’re a man?”

“Because I’m a demon.”

“I didn’t realize demons and computers had so much in common.”

The frown devolved into a scowl. “Fairhaven is a small town. How many women named Sarah can there be?”

“That’s my hope.”

“How far have you gotten?”

“I borrowed a book on fae from the library.”

He regarded me. “That’s it?”

I gesticulated wildly at my leg. “Busy day yesterday, remember?”

“What’s your plan?”

“I thought I might call Officer Leo and see if he can help us find her quickly.”

“And what do you intend to tell him? That you’re searching for a teenager from the fae realm, a world that he knows nothing about?”

“I wasn’t planning to be honest. He trusts me.”

“There’s a less risky option.”

I folded my arms. “Let’s hear it.” Kane was clearly invested in wrapping this up ASAP to get rid of Sian, so his idea was likely better than mine.

“I have a friend in town that trades in information.”

“Are you talking about yourself in third person?” When I first met Kane at the Devil’s Playground, he’d referred to himself as a collector of secrets and assured me he’d one day claim mine—which he did.

“Not at all,” he said. “Birdie is a fount of information. I go to her whenever I want to hire someone new at the club. Thanks to her, I’ve avoided many unpleasant situations.”

“Now I’m picturing a giant warehouse of wooden crates on her property like the final scene in Raiders of the Lost Ark.”

Kane knocked on my head. “I know you’re a Luddite, but surely you’ve heard of computer databases.”

“Okay, so you have the geek squad on speed dial. What will you need to give her in return?”

“Leave that to me. How did you injure your leg?”

“I went looking for the werewolves that attacked Anna,” I admitted.

“And did you find them?”

“No, they’re gone.”

He lifted an eyebrow. “Gone?”

“Left town, according to Anna. She found their campsite and scared them off.”
