“Careful, Anna. That’s still a possibility.” It wasn’t my finest moment, threatening a frightened werewolf, but she’d taken me off guard and emotions were running a little high. Just because Kane accepted my identity didn’t mean West would. A goddess of nightmares and ghosts wouldn’t be welcome here and the pack was more than capable of running me out of town. Anna didn’t know anything beyond my brief foray into her mind, but West was smart, and she’d likely given him ample information to figure it out. It was my fault, really. I shouldn’t have used my powers on her. I knew better, yet I’d felt compelled to subjugate her. That had been the goddess in me, demanding subordination. A minor loss of control that was now biting me in the ass.

“Why are you calling to tell me this?”

“Do I seem stupid enough to tell you in person?”

I pinched the bridge of my nose. “No, I mean why are you telling me at all?”

“So that you’ll keep your nose out of things that aren’t your business. West won’t want you anywhere near the pack now.”

She hung up.

I stared at the phone blankly for a moment, trying to collect my thoughts.

“Lorelei?”

I turned to look at Sian. “How’s the chili?”

“Spicy. Is something wrong? You look pale.”

My arm started to burn. The sensation was milder than the last time, as though my skin wasn’t sure how it wanted to respond.

West was here.

“Sian, do me a favor and go upstairs. Don’t come down until I tell you.”

“Is anything wrong? I am skilled with a blade.”

“Nothing I can’t handle. Please, do as I ask.” I didn’t want the innocent fae to get caught up in supernatural politics. He only wanted to find his sister.

The knock on the door tightened the growing knot in my stomach. I squared my shoulders and prepared to face the consequences of my actions.

West stood on the porch ensconced in a well-worn brown leather jacket and tight jeans. One look at his face told me everything I needed to know about his reaction.

Not. Happy.

I flung open the door and waited. The cold air nipped at my nose. “Want to come in?”

“I’ll stay on the porch. What I have to say won’t take very long.”

“Okay.” I stepped outside and closed the door behind me.

“I knew you were bad for Fairhaven. I told you that. If I had my druthers, you’d be gone by sundown.”

“Nobody says druthers anymore. Nobody even knows what druthers are.”

“That’s why you make a good Scrabble opponent.”

“Anna only told you about me to get me out of the way. Something about those werewolves has her terrified. Did she tell you how she stole their sketches from the police? Why would she do that?”

“Never mind that. I’m here to talk about you.”

Sighing, I sank against the doorjamb. “Fine. What exactly did Anna tell you?”

“That you manipulated her mind. Showed her a nightmare and then threatened her not to tell anybody.”

“This isn’t the way I wanted you to find out.”

“Because you hoped I never would.”
