“It was a mistake, West. I shouldn’t have done it.”

He folded his bulging arms across his chest. “I know you’re a ghost whisperer. What else can you do?”

“You haven’t figured it out?”

“Didn’t bother to try. I came straight here as soon as Anna told me. I’d much rather hear the truth from you than a book or computer.”

“You won’t find much about me anyway. It’s mostly speculation.”

That got his attention. “Who are you?”

I closed my eyes. There was only one way to get West to trust me. Of course, it meant I also had to trust him. A double-edged sword of truth.

“You’re right about me,” I blurted. “I’m a danger to Fairhaven. To anyone who tries to get close to me.”

“Are you some kind of weapon?”

“In the wrong hands, yes. I’m Melinoe reborn, goddess of nightmares and ghosts.”

“Nightmares,” he repeated. “You give people nightmares?”

“Among other things.”

He nodded, as though I’d just told him I preferred flour tortillas to corn. “Does Sullivan know?”

“Yes.”

“Who else?”

“The ghosts at the Castle.”

He angled his head to regard me. “What happened to the rest of the ghosts from the cemetery?”

“I helped them cross over. Ray and Nana Pratt asked to stay, and against my better judgment, I let them.”

“When you say you helped them cross over, does that mean you pointed them in the right direction?”

I knew what West was really asking. I debated how much honesty I wanted to share.

He must’ve sensed my apprehension because he said, “You might as well spit it out now.”

I exhaled. “I can control spirits if I choose to.”

“The ghosts at your place…?”

“They’re autonomous. Once in a blue moon, I’ve shown them how to do something by taking over their movements, but they don’t realize I’ve done it.”

“Why not tell them what you’re capable of?”

“I don’t know,” I answered honestly. “I’ve kept my identity secret my whole life. It feels uncomfortable to share pieces of it, even now.”

“Your parents?”

“Human. After they died, my grandparents were left to raise their godly granddaughter. They did the best they could with the information they had.”

“Why hide? Why not just live as Melinoe?”

“Because I wouldn’t know how to do that. And Pops knew I’d have a target on my back the minute anybody found out my identity. He taught me almost everything I know.”
