“For me, too. Then again, there’ve been lots of firsts since I met you.”

“I’ll take that as a compliment.”

Sian joined us at the window. “Is it truly a hand?”

“Yes, indeedy.”

Ray looked at me with a deadpan expression. “You seem awfully chipper about this development.”

“Hands are cool.”

Sian scanned the backyard. “I can’t see it.”

Ray pushed his head through the wall for a better look outside.

“I frightened it,” I said.

Ray returned his head to the kitchen. “Why didn’t it set off the ward? Because it’s small?”

“Because it’s dead.”

“Really? Moved pretty fast for a dead thing.”

I gave him a pointed look. “Says the ghost who goes from zero to sixty at the sight of a mouse.”

“I don’t mind snakes or spiders, but rodents give me the creeps.”

I exited the kitchen to retrieve my coat from the rack in the foyer.

“What are you doing?” Ray asked.

“Going to find that hand.”

“Why don’t you stay inside and let Ingrid and I search for it?”

“Because you won’t be able to do anything if you find it.”

“And what will you do?”

“I haven’t decided yet.”

“There’s a rake in the shed.”

“It’s a hand, not a leaf.”

“Thought you might want it as a weapon.”

“If I want to use a weapon, I have plenty to choose from.”

Sian’s eyes widened.

Nana Pratt appeared in the foyer. “Bring the laundry basket.”

“Why would I do that?”

“You can flip it upside down and trap the hand underneath.”

“It’s a hand,” I replied. “It’ll just push off the basket.”
