“Let me know if you find anything worth sharing,” I said.

“I will, but no promises.”

“I know. It’s only a working theory.” A working theory I felt confident Phaedra would soon prove correct.

She shook her head ruefully. “It’s always something in this town. Stay safe, Lorelei.”

“You, too.” Staying safe was the story of my life. No need to tell me twice.

CHAPTER 13

Istood in the spare bedroom, admiring Sian’s handiwork. “I can’t believe you did this in such a short time.”

“I told you my skills are renowned.”

“I’m sorry I haven’t held up my end of the bargain yet.”

“The bargain was affording me sanctuary and that you have fulfilled.”

The back of my neck began to feel tight, and I rubbed the muscles.

Sian observed me. “Are you hurt?”

“No, I’m fine. It’s more of a nuisance pain.” And suddenly I realized what had triggered it. “I’ll be right back to continue complimenting you.”

I hurried downstairs to see which visitor had caused the mildly painful sensation.

Anna Dupree graced my doorstep. She wore her usual snarl, but at least her injuries had healed.

“Hello, Anna.”

She glanced furtively over her shoulder. “Can I come in?”

Despite her tough-girl posture, fear emanated from her. When the emotions were as palpable as hers, I didn’t even need to access her nightmares to sense them.

“Are you sure you want to?”

Her fingers twitched. “Look, I know you’re pissed off, and I’m the last person you want to see right now.”

“Not the last person, but definitely not in the top half.”

Her gaze darted to the road again. “If you don’t want to talk to me, just say so and I’ll go.”

Curious to learn the reason for her visit, I decided to end her suffering and invited her in.

“Can I take your coat?”

The werewolf looked at her sleeves as though she’d forgotten she was wearing one. “I guess.” She shrugged off the coat and held it up awkwardly, despite the fact that the coat rack stood beside her.

I took the coat and hung it on an empty branch.

“Thanks,” Anna mumbled. “I usually just toss mine on the sofa.”

“If I had a sofa, I’d do the same.”

She actually smiled in response to that.

“Can I interest you in a drink? I have about twenty types of herbal tea.”
