Anna typed furiously on her phone. “I told you he has a plan.”

My phone lit up with a text from Sage. He’s with me.

I stared at the screen, initially thinking she meant Sian.

West? I typed back.

Sage sent a thumbs up emoji.

I cut a glance at Anna. “You know where he is.”

She nodded without looking at me. “I’m staying here to keep an eye on our visitors.”

I snuck away from the crowd and headed back to my truck. I was curious to learn how West managed to escape a burning trailer and make his way to Sage’s cabin without anyone noticing.

I drove the short distance to Sage’s house. The front door swung open as I approached. Sage ushered me inside and quickly shut the door behind me.

West sat on the sofa, hunched over with his head buried in his hands. He looked nothing like the tough alpha I’d come to know.

Sage brought him a glass of water, which he accepted without looking up.

“How did you know I was there?” I asked.

“Anna,” Sage replied. She ran her fingers through his hair in an affectionate gesture before joining him on the sofa.

“How did you escape?”

West stared at the water in his glass. “There’s a trapdoor in my trailer that leads to an underground tunnel. Took me years to build, but it was worth it.”

“You’ve been waiting for this day,” I said, somewhat surprised.

“More or less. I didn’t know they’d set my house on fire, but I figured the day would come when I’d need a secret escape route.” He lifted his head. “Is anybody hurt?”

“Not that I could see. Your pack was putting out the fire. The other wolves…”

A howling sound filled the cabin, causing every bone in my body to shudder in unison.

“Are almost here,” West said, finishing my sentence. His jaw set. “They must’ve picked up my scent.”

“What do they want?” Gran’s voice shouted from the bedroom.

“To kill me,” he said simply.

“They’re from his old pack,” Sage explained.

“Lorelei knows,” West said. “Who told you they were here? Was it Anna?”

“Doesn’t matter.” Regardless of whether I liked Anna, I wasn’t about to get her in trouble when she was only looking out for her alpha’s best interest.

West’s mouth was set in a grim line. “I recognized a few of their faces. Hell, I played Little League with two of them. Jax and I used to fish in the creek together on weekends.”

“I don’t get the impression they’re here to go fishing with you,” I said.

“No, they want him to go swimming with the fishes,” Gran called from the bedroom.

“No need for a narrator,” Sage yelled.

“I’m sorry this is happening,” I said.
