I heard the sound of the front door open, and Sage emerged from inside, clutching an axe.

“Why don’t you do us all a favor and drop dead?” Sage demanded.

Jax smirked. “West has made some pretty friends here. Maybe we ought to have a little fun first.”

I unsheathed my sword. “Oh, I guarantee it’ll be fun—for me.”

Jax’s smile broadened. “I like our odds. What do you think, boys? It’s been a little while since we got to play rough.” He eyed me. “Hope you like it doggy style.”

Charming.

I showed my teeth. “Hope your ass likes the taste of metal.”

Jax’s bones cracked as he shifted. His transition wasn’t as seamless as that of the Arrowhead wolves. If he had an injury that made shifting difficult, I could use it to my advantage.

Gran’s window slid open. “Leave my granddaughter alone.” She flung a small bottle at another werewolf’s head. The contents splashed his face.

He laughed and wiped it away. “You think throwing perfume is going to save you?” His eyes rolled to the back of his head and his body seized. He keeled over, shaking uncontrollably.

Gran chuckled to herself as she slid the window closed again. The elderly fae could be brutal when she wanted to be. I made a mental note never to get on her bad side.

West appeared beside me.

“West, get back inside!” Sage’s voice trembled with fear.

“I’m not letting you fight for me.”

I twisted to look at West. “Piss off. I’m doing it anyway.” And if I had to send a message to the other wolves, using Jax to do it suited me just fine.

I blew a kiss to Jax. “Come and get me, big fella.”

Slobber dripped from the wolf’s fangs as Jax lunged at me. I sliced off the tip of his ear, wounding him just enough to stun him. Blood spilled from the tiny blood vessels. I grabbed him by the scruff of his neck and kept my sword pointed outward as a warning to the other wolves. I wasn’t strong enough to break his neck, but I didn’t need to be.

I only needed to access his head.

I slipped inside and seized control. A whimper escaped him. Poor bastard must’ve hated to hear that sound coming from his own mouth.

The wolf’s body slumped flat on the ground as he lost consciousness and I lowered myself with him. Jax’s mind was angry and chaotic, but not abnormally so. There was no spell at work here. I sensed latent affection for West, and nostalgia for the childhood they’d shared. Jax wasn’t simply a grade A douchebag following orders. Interesting.

As far as nightmares went, his were fairly standard. Erectile dysfunction. Falling off a cliff. Drowning.

I skipped over the first option for obvious reasons and chose the nightmare behind door number two.

Jax stood in human form on the outcrop of a snow-capped mountain. The air was thin and cold, and there was a large lake in the distance.

“Hi there,” I said with a friendly wave.

He looked around in a panic. “Where did you take me?”

“You tell me. It’s your cliff.” I peered behind him. “Nice view. Is that Lake Superior?”

“How did you teleport me here? Are you some kind of witch?”

I made a noise of disgust. “Okay, now you’ve pissed me off.”

“Then what are you?”

“Your worst nightmare.”
