“Dare I ask what was in it?” West asked.

“Probably best not to tell you.”

“I told you not to use deadly force,” West said.

Her mouth split in a grin. “I was seventy percent sure it wouldn’t kill him, but it was fun to try.”

A figure burst through the trees. Anna. She took one look at West and her legs nearly buckled beneath her.

“You’re safe.”

Sage’s face scrunched with rage. “No thanks to you. Why didn’t you tell him those two wolves that attacked you were from his old pack? He could’ve been killed.”

West touched her arm, and her rage quieted.

“They know about this cabin now,” Anna said. “Sage and her grandmother should probably relocate to the trailer park until the threat has passed.”

Sage lifted her chin. “I’m not going anywhere. This is my home.”

“They came back with five wolves this time,” Anna pointed out. “Next time they’ll come back with ten or even twenty. You’re a weak link. They’ll use you to get to West.”

Sage took a step closer to her. “I think we both know who the weak link is.”

A snarl erupted from Anna and West jumped between them. “Sage can stay. She can ward the cabin before they have a chance to come back.” He pinned his gaze on Anna. “You and I will talk later—in private.”

Anna began to crumble. “I’m sorry, West. I never meant…”

He silenced her with a lethal look. “I said later. Go home, Anna.”

“Speaking of homes, you’re going to need one,” Anna said, lowering her head. “They couldn’t save yours.”

“I’ll figure something out.”

Anna nodded and fled.

“She regrets how she handled the situation,” I told him. “She was only trying to protect you.”

“The reason doesn’t matter. Her silence endangered the entire pack.”

“Just don’t be too hard on her,” I said.

His brow creased. “She ratted you out. Why are you defending her?”

“Because we don’t always make our best choices when our actions stem from fear. But that fear stemmed from losing someone she cares about. I get that, and so should you.”

I swiped my sword off the ground and walked to my truck without a backward glance.

CHAPTER 14

Iarrived home to find two assassins in my kitchen, chatting with Sian over cups of coffee.

Gunther tipped his head back to look at me. “Welcome home, honey. How was your day?”

Camryn noticed the blood on my clothes and grimaced. “I’m guessing not the best. Want me to burn those for you?”

“I’ll try a stain stick first, thanks.”

Gunther Saxon and Camryn Sable were cousins from a talented family of mages. They were also members of both La Fortuna, an ancient mage society, as well as the Assassins Guild.
