“For the spare bedroom,” Sian clarified.

“How useful.” Gun’s gaze shifted to me. “You have no obligation to work for free just because that work is of a helpful nature.”

“I guess I feel a sense of obligation.”

Gun scrutinized me. “Why? I don’t get it. I mean, it’s an admirable quality, but you can’t cash it at the store.”

“No, I can’t.”

He regarded me. “How dire is the financial situation?”

I didn’t want to fully admit how bad it was. “I can keep the lights on, but the radiators are set to low.”

Cam rubbed her arms. “That explains the chill in the air.”

Gun brought his cup to his lips. “Assassins make great money, plus healthcare and an enviable retirement plan.”

“It’s probably enviable because assassins rarely make it to retirement.”

Gun winced. “Ouch. Direct hit.”

“I wouldn’t make a very good assassin.”

He pointed to my face. “You have the scowl for it.”

I felt my scowl deepen in response. “I don’t begrudge you and Cam your livelihoods, but I’m not a good fit for it.”

“You certainly have the chops. I’ve never seen a layperson wield a weapon with such skill and, dare I say, finesse.”

“Finesse? High praise from Gunther Saxon, indeed.”

He winked. “Takes one to know one. What about Kane? I’m sure he’d be thrilled to have you work alongside him at the nightclub.” He chuckled. “I can picture Josie’s face now.”

“I don’t want to work at the club.”

“Why not? Josie wears a permanent scowl, and she gets along there just fine.”

“I think it would be unwise for Kane and me to spend that much time together.”

“Isn’t this the honeymoon phase? You’re supposed to want to be joined at the hip until the power struggle phase sets in.”

“This is the introductory phase. I like my solitude.”

He snorted. “Sure you do.”

“How much is your mortgage?” Cam asked.

“I bought the house outright. It’s the maintenance that’s draining my bank account.”

Gun shook his head sadly. “You’re learning what the owners of Downton Abbey learned years ago.”

“You should consider the guild, Lorelei,” Camryn urged. “Kane would loop every hole to get you in.”

“I do not think one should kill for money,” Sian interrupted.

Gun locked eyes with him. “What? You think we should do it for free?”

“It is immoral and unethical.”
