Gun straightened his shoulders. “My targets are chosen with care and consideration.”

“Except you don’t choose them,” I said. “You agree to the terms.”

“Exactly. I have to agree. I don’t blindly accept any work that comes my way. I can afford to be selective. Besides, your boyfriend rules with an iron fist. If I decided to stray from the rules, he’d step in.”

My chest tightened. “Kane isn’t my boyfriend.”

“Should I say your lover?”

“I hate the word lover. I’d rather die alone and have my face eaten by zombie cats than describe a partner with that word.”

Gun pretended to type on his phone. “Note to self: don’t ask Lorelei to sing Part-Time Lover at karaoke.”

Camryn’s gaze rested on the top half of my clothing. “Would you mind running upstairs to change? The blood is making me feel nauseated.”

Sian frowned. “But you are an assassin.”

“Yes, but not a messy one. I always carry antibacterial wipes.”

I excused myself and ran upstairs to change. Nana Pratt met me at the top of the stairs.

“Where’ve you been?” I asked.

“Monitoring the situation from a respectful distance.”

I advanced toward the bedroom and became aware of the ghost’s presence right behind me.

“What is it, Nana Pratt?”

“If you must know, I agree with Sian. I don’t understand how you can be friends with them.”

“I told you to leave it alone, Ingrid,” Ray’s voice cut in.

I turned to look at them. “With Cam and Gun? Because they’re assassins?”

“You say it like they work at the bank.”

“The banks kill people, just more slowly and with less blood.”

Ray chuckled. “Good one, Lorelei.”

Nana Pratt gave him a sharp look. “No, it most certainly isn’t. How can you defend them, knowing how they earn a living? Taking a life is wrong.”

I tapped my fingers against the doorjamb. “Are you really intent on having a morality argument with the goddess of nightmares?”

“You’re desperate for money, yet you don’t kill for a living.”

“Desperate is a bit of a stretch. Kane’s a demon. Why aren’t you as hard on him as the others?”

“Because he’s not a prince of hell anymore, but they’re still murderers.”

“What if I told you Kane isn’t a prince of hell anymore because he was forced out, not because he abdicated his role?”

“I may be old and dead, but my eyes work just fine,” she said, somewhat miffed. “I can see he’s a better demon than he once was.”

She was right. The reason he was forced to flee his circle of hell was because of a failed coup. He’d tried to overthrow Lucifer in order to improve conditions, but instead he was caught and tortured until a daring rescue attempt by Dantalion and other supporters. Kane’s redemption tour began long before he moved to Fairhaven.

“He still feels a lot of guilt and shame for the things he did,” I said.
