As I rose from my chair, Nana Pratt burst into the kitchen, her breathing labored.

“How are you out of breath?” I asked. “You’re dead.”

Nana Pratt placed an apparitional hand against her chest. “Right. Of course. There are two large men headed to the front door. They don’t look like they’re bringing a delivery.”

“Good, because I haven’t ordered anything.”

“What’s going on?” Gun asked.

“I suspect our mutual friend Magnarella has decided to send his goons to collect me for an unscheduled visit.”

Gun adjusted his collar with a flourish. “Allow me.”

He waltzed through the foyer to the front door and opened it as the two large men reached the unwelcoming mat. Square jaws. Buzzed haircuts. They had all the hallmarks of Magnarella’s goons.

“We’re here for Lorelei Clay,” the taller goon grunted.

I watched from the safety of the kitchen doorway as Gun leaned against the doorjamb with a casual air. “I’m afraid Miss Clay is currently unavailable. Would you like to leave a message at the tone? Beep.”

The two men exchanged confused glances. “Are you her robot servant?” the shorter man asked.

Beside me, Camryn snickered. “I can’t believe he sent these two buffoons to get you. I’ve heard of self-sabotage, but this is ridiculous.”

“Magnarella thinks we have an agreement,” I said, although I was curious to see how the situation with Gun played out. At least I was off the hook for the impromptu interrogation session. Small mercies.

“Then why are you letting Gun…” Cam broke into a smile. “Oh, cool. Yeah, let’s stay here and watch.”

“Consider me her liege lord,” Gun explained to the men.

The taller one scrunched his wide nose, stretching the nostrils even wider. “What’s a liege lord?”

Gun tipped back his head and sighed. “This is no fun.”

“Where is Lorelei Clay?” the shorter goon demanded.

“Do you have an appointment?”

“No, but the boss says she’ll come along willingly.”

“I very much doubt that.” Gun whipped a card from his pocket. From this angle, I couldn’t see which one he’d chosen. At least I knew it wasn’t a deadly one. Gun was smart enough to follow the rules of the guild.

The taller goon opened his mouth to speak, and the gibberish of an infant spilled from his lips.

“Goo goo gaga,” his companion replied.

They stared at each other in horror.

Cam laughed. “Out of the mouths of babes.”

The taller one tried to yell at Gun, but the only sound he made was the wailing cry of a tired infant.

Gun used his foot to close the door. Spinning toward us, he dusted off his hands. “Your meeting has been cancelled, madam.”

“Magnarella will be thrilled when his men return to the compound incomprehensible.”

Gun shrugged. “It’ll wear off in an hour, unless you’d rather I stop it now.”

I didn’t hesitate. “If you stop it now, I’ll toss you into Bone Lake.”
