“Then how did you know my name and where to find me?”

Her mouth quirked. “Crows are sometimes loyal to more than one mistress.”

Betrayed by a bird. That had to be a first.

A knock interrupted my next question. Two women entered the room, each one as stunning as the other.

“Lorelei, I’d like you to meet my sisters.” One sister was dressed completely in black and the other one in winter white. I’d have to remember to tell Camryn she was on trend.

The woman dressed in black introduced herself as Annie. Her bronzed skin gave her a healthy glow, although I could tell from the threads of silver in her dark hair that she was the eldest of the three sisters.

“And I’m Laz,” the woman in the winter white pantsuit said. Her white-blonde hair was swept back in an elegant chignon. I noticed the bangle bracelet on her slender wrist featured the same Greek key design.

Annie pondered me. “Would you mind standing so we can take a closer look at you?”

I felt fairly confident I wasn’t standing to be measured for a dress. I debated whether to bolt for the exit, but my survival instincts weren’t in overdrive, so I opted to stay. There was something oddly comforting about these women.

Chloe joined her sisters in walking around me in a tight circle. They stopped to scrutinize my face, like they were teenaged girls searching for an elusive zit.

I touched my forehead. No bumps.

Annie snapped her fingers. “We need the poultice.”

I leaned back. “There’s nothing on my face.”

Laz produced a small square cloth from her pocket and passed it to her sister.

“Hold still,” Annie told me, as she placed the cloth on my forehead. It smelled like rain and felt like morning dew against my skin.

“I’ll be honest,” I said. “I didn’t know what to expect this morning, but it definitely wasn’t this.”

Annie removed the cloth and took a step back, seemingly satisfied. “There. Do you see?”

Chloe gasped. “I do.”

“See what?” I asked.

“This explains it,” Chloe continued. “She’s marked. It’s faint, but it’s there.”

Laz continued to stare at my forehead from an inch away. Her breath smelled like peppermint. “Fascinating.”

“Marked?” Was I some sort of prey? Had The Corporation somehow marked me as a target? Or Magnarella?

Chloe’s smile bordered on relieved. “We know your name.”

“Yes, because I told you.”

“Your real name,” Laz said with emphasis.

Did the poultice reveal some sort of invisible goddess tattoo? My mind raced with possibilities. “Who are you?”

Annie flicked the cloth into the nearby trashcan. “Haven’t you figured it out yet? We’re known as the Moirai.”

My throat ran dry. I wasn’t sure why I was speechless. I’d met my share of otherworldly beings, but these three sisters… They were legendary.

“Clotho, Lachesis, and Antropos? The Fates?”

Chloe’s laughter sounded like tinkling sleigh bells. “You make us sound like a singing group.”
