“It was,” I insisted. “A car crash.”

“Yes, I understand that part,” Annie replied smoothly, “but the death itself… The outcome was not accidental.”

I blinked, stunned by the revelation. “You’re telling me someone murdered my parents?”

The edges of Annie’s mouth turned down. “I’m afraid so.”

My heart beat faster. “How can you know that?”

“Because we’re the Fates and we know things,” Annie said.

“The kind of information you can only dream of knowing,” Chloe added.

“Congratulations,” I said.

Laz jabbed Chloe in the ribs with a bony elbow. “No need to humble brag.”

“That’s not a humble brag,” I pointed out. “That’s just straight-up bragging.” I folded my arms. “If you’re so clever, tell me the type of demon that tried to kill me in Bone Lake the other day.”

Chloe elbowed her middle sister. “You can field this one.”

“She is called a kulshedra,” Laz said.

She. Laz knew the demon was female. “How do you know that? Did you put her there?”

“We are the circle of life,” Chloe explained. “Birth, life, and death.”

“But only I know death,” Annie interjected. “My sisters are clueless in that regard.”

“We’re like meteorologists,” Laz said. “We merely forecast.”

“According to my friend Ray, that means you don’t know anything,” I said.

Chloe tittered her appreciation.

I pivoted toward Annie. “My parents… Did you cut the thread?”

“Whether I operated the scissors or not, I can’t tell you who murdered them. It is beyond my ken.”

I wondered whether Pops had known, whether it was a secret he’d hidden from me to keep me safe.

My gaze slid to Laz. “You’re in charge of measuring the length of thread. Did you choose their fate?”

Laz showed no remorse. “Your parents had to die in order for your destiny to be fulfilled.”

My blood burned hot. “A minute ago, you didn’t know my parents had a child. Now you’re telling me their deaths were necessary for my sake?” I didn’t wait for an answer. “You said I was marked. Is that how you identified me as Melinoe?”

The three sisters exchanged glances. A silent conversation seemed to follow.

Chloe answered first. “The mark was made by another.”

I resisted the urge to rub my forehead raw. “For what purpose?”

“What does it tell you?”

“That your fate was chosen for you,” Chloe said.

“Isn’t that what fate is?” I asked. “Your destiny being chosen by another?”
