Annie tapped the pads of her fingers together. “Fate can be a fickle beast.”

“Are you talking about yourself in the third person? Because people don’t tend to like that.”

“What my sister means,” Chloe began, “is that there is no one path. Certain elements of a life are set in stone, but the choices you make along the way… Those are yours alone.”

I still didn’t understand the mark. “What does the mark look like?”

Chloe smiled. “No need to worry. Even if one can see it, it doesn’t detract from your beauty.”

“I live in sweatpants and T-shirts,” I shot back. “I’m not worried about my beauty.” I wanted a description for research purposes. If there was one thing I knew about the Fates, it was their affinity for vague commentary.

“It’s a rose,” Laz said.

“A rose, as in the pretty flower?” That seemed like an odd choice.

“Yes.”

“You’re telling me I have the symbol of a rose on my forehead that’s invisible to me and just about everybody else in the world.”

Laz nodded. “Correct.”

“Why can you see it? Because you’re the Fates?”

“Because we had the power to reveal what was hidden,” Annie said. “Whoever marked you possesses equal or lesser power to us, but not greater.”

“Because if it were greater, then you wouldn’t be able to see the mark either?” I asked.

“Exactly,” Annie said.

“Can you tell me who marked me?”

“We cannot,” Chloe said simply.

“Can’t or won’t?”

“Cannot,” Chloe repeated.

“The rose as a symbol doesn’t tip you off?” If the Fates didn’t recognize the mark, what chance did I have?

“It’s a symbol that belongs to many pantheons,” Annie said. “It would be difficult to know with certainty.”

Her body stiffened. Her arms jerked outward, and she clutched her sister’s arm.

“Is she having a vision?” I asked.

“Muscle cramp,” Annie squeaked. “It’ll pass in a minute.”

“I have a banana in my office,” Laz offered.

“She won’t eat it. I told her to take the magnesium supplements, too, but nooo,” Chloe said. “Big sister always thinks she knows best.”

Annie’s body relaxed and she exhaled slowly. “There. All better.”

“There’s something else you should know,” Chloe began, but one look from Laz silenced her.

“Too much,” Laz whispered.

I looked from sister to sister. “Too much what?”
