As I step inside the grand foyer, my high heels click against the floors. A tall, well-dressed man stands behind the reception desk, and his warm expression grows from a smile to a grin when he sees me.He has a buzz cut and sun-worn skin.

“Good morning, miss. How may I help you?”

I shift my weight, clear my throat, and try to make my voice sound professional. “I’m Willow. The new assistant for Mr. Donnelly.”

The receptionist nods, his face expressionless, and gestures for me to follow him. His polished dress shoes click against the floor as we walk down a long hallway, passing doors with faded gold plaques that read ‘Vera Grant’, ‘Natalie Alba’, and ‘Linda Sommers’. He stopped in front of a door marked ‘Zane Donnelly’, and after two sharp raps on the door, a deep voice sounds from inside.

“Come in.”

The receptionist opens the door for me, and I step inside, my heart racing. The room becomes devoid of all the air. Sitting behind a large mahogany desk is a man with piercing blue eyes, and the light from the windows highlights his chiseled jawline. His eyes pierce right through me. His dark locks are perfectly styled, and he wears a fitted navy suit that accentuates his broad shoulders.

“Good morning, Ms. Hamilton. I’m Zane Donnelly,” he says, his voice deep and smooth.

I take his large hand in mine and try to form the words ‘pleased to meet you’ but my mouth has gone dry.

“I, uh...” I get out before he throws his head back and laughs. It is a joyful sound.

My heart thumps wildly after that unintelligible stutter.

“It’s alright,” he says kindly as he gestures to the chair across from him. “I know this must be overwhelming. Please, have a seat.”

I sink into the chair, looking at Zane, wondering why the last assistant left? Who wouldn’t want a job where they can stare at this all day? He is too handsome for real life. I briefly consider if he is a character straight out of the latest kinky romance novel before I shake the thought away.

The Wilkins, Parker, and Donnelly firm has a long-standing legacy of drawing some of the most ambitious legal minds from around the country. Its lawyers are well-respected for their tenacity and drive to succeed, as well as their unparalleled understanding of the law. Their ability to influence court cases that make headlines all over the country is well known.

Though I’m familiar with the grind of work, I don’t want to settle for simply going through the motions. I don’t want to be stuck in an endless cycle of being an assistant. I want to make something of myself. Everyone says they want to succeed, but do I have what it takes to stand out and be different? I’m devoted to following the rules, but I won’t let that limit me. It’s easy to say everybody wants something more in life, but this isn’t just a phase for me. I have dreams of making an impact and being recognized for the value I bring-not just another interchangeable cog in a machine.

Although I know it’s against the rules, I still fantasize about my boss and his impeccable looks. Every time I catch myself admiring his features, guilt comes and I push away the thought. The women in the office swoon over him. I will never get close to him, but a girl can dream. I’ll fawn over him from afar. He is attractive in a way that seems too perfect for real life. Too handsome for his own good.

The pull of attraction towards him is clear, but I’m determined to stay professional. So, I bury those deep down and work hard to be the best assistant I can be.

“So, the previous assistant retired, and it’s very important that my calendar is kept up to date. It’s my lifeline. I live and breathe by it. Is that understood?”

I nod, writing that down on my notepad.

“I assume you know how to answer the phones and filter through emails?” he asks, leaning back in his chair with a pen in between his teeth.

“Of course, sir.”

He nods and points to his door. “Let’s get to work then.”

As I organize papers, file documents, and answer emails, I daydream about a different life. A career where I am respected and appreciated instead of just a background player in someone else’s success. I dream of a job that makes me proud, one that lets me be the star and make a difference in the world.

I barely have a social life and on top of that… never been in a serious relationship before. Everyone tells me I am allergic to commitment. With the jobs I have taken in the past, I have little time for socializing and dating. What do they expect?

After everything from my desk is complete, I silently admire Zane. Why can’t I have a man like him? One that makes my heart race…

Yes, I know, crushing on my boss is a no-no, but have you seen him? The man literally walks on water, and even with the slight grey in his hair, I would let him bend me over this desk and fuck me. Multiple times if he is up for it. And with a body like that, I bet he has the stamina for it.

Willow

I’m five steps away from my apartment building when a sleek black limo pulls up to the curb. The only person rich enough to afford such a luxury is my new boss.

I have heard the rumors of the infamous lawyer’s reputation as the lawyer to beat. A man who is both admired and feared. I am more than a little intimidated as I step off the curb, my heart beating a nervous rhythm in my chest.

As he exits the limousine and approaches me, my anxiety fades away. My eyes rush over him. He’s tall, well over six feet, and has an aura of power about him. He wears an expensive tailored suit, the crisp white shirt peeking out from beneath his blazer and the silk tie giving away his wealth. His hair is dark and neatly coiffed, his eyes a deep blue. His face showcases a perfect combination of angles and curves.
