“So, I need a favor. And you can say no...” he says, wiping his mouth with the napkin. “I need someone to accompany me to my sister’s wedding. I haven’t had time to find a date yet, and thought maybe you wouldn’t care to go with me.”

My eyes go wide. Is he asking me out? Clearly, in a professional manner. “When is it? I’m not sure I have anything to wear...”

“On Saturday. Don’t worry about that, you can charge whatever you need to my credit card. You’d be doing me a favor.”

Okay, so what’s the catch? This sexy and rich man is asking me to go to a wedding with him. He wants me to charge whatever I need to his credit card. Am I dreaming?

“I need you to pretend to be my girlfriend...”

And there it is... although pretends to fawn over him won’t be hard. Hell, I do that daily anyway. “I guess I can do that.”

This is the first time he has looked into my eyes since he popped the question. “Are you serious? That’s it. No having to beg?”

My eyes swipe to the side and I bite my lip. “I mean, if you want to beg, I wouldn’t mind it. Grovel, even...”

Zane laughs and smooths his tie. “You’re funny. I like that.”

I know plenty of things he’ll like...

“Come on!” Monica says, linking her arm with mine. “Let’s go get something to drink.”

We make our way down the street, taking in the sights and sounds of the city. As we reach the cafe, I notice a slight tension in Monica’s body. She is still bubbling, but there is something else there, too.

“What is it?” I ask as we take a seat at a small corner table.

“Nothing. It’s just…I don’t know. There’s something about this whole thing that’s a little scary.”

I nod and look down at the menu. My heart is pounding as I contemplate what I’m doing. I am going to pretend to be Zane’s girlfriend. It sounds so silly and immature, but I’m eager.

“So, when’s the big day?” Monica asks, her voice a little hesitant.

“This Saturday.”

My friend’s eyes widen. “So you are going to pretend to be his girlfriend?”

I smile and nod. “It’ll be fun. He doesn’t seem to be a bad guy. Can’t be that hard to pretend, especially when he looks like that.”

Monica smiles and takes a sip of her coffee. “Well, I’m glad you have something to look forward to. I’m sure it’ll be an adventure.”

We both laugh.

“So, where should I get the dress?”

Monica thinks for a moment. “I know just the place. It’s close to here.”

We finish our coffee and leave the cafe arm-in-arm until we are in the store. I admire the lovely dresses and ensembles on display. Monica steers me toward a few that catch her eye, and I try them on. Each one is a little more beautiful than the last. I settle on a stunning teal dress with gold embroidery on the bodice. Monica nods and we make our way to the cashier.

“Thanks for coming with me. It’s not like I go to formal gatherings…”

“Anything for my best friend… it’s been a while.”

The line moves and soon enough, I am now the proud owner of the dress.

“You got time to drink some wine at my place?” I ask, stopping outside the store.
