“I know life for you isn’t normal but I want as close to normal as we can get.”

“You’ll have that, as much as I can offer.”

“There’s nothing normal about you leaving in the middle of the night.” Her eyes wouldn’t meet his.

“You’ve known what I do, you know how this works, so unless you’ve had a change of heart about accepting me, then what’s the real issue, Kenni?”

“Nothing…” she said quickly, then her eyes lowered to his shoulder. That was when it hit. The only part of his life she had been exposed to was the one time things went wrong. The one time he fucked up.

When she attempted to pull away Carter gripped her hip tighter, slipped his fingers into her hair, and tugged enough to pull her head back. He lowered his face over hers, so their eyes met. His mouth was so damn close he could feel her breath fanning over his lips. “You don’t have to worry about me.”

“I’m not worried about you,” she snapped defensively. He caught what she was attempting to hide by shifting her eyes.

“Then you’ll miss me?”

“No.”

He smirked and edged closer so his mouth grazed hers, offering the warmth of her lips. “I’m a killer, Kenni. That’s not new, so you either don’t want me to leave because you’re worried, because you’ll miss me, or because you have changed your mind about being able to handle existing in my world. Which is it?”

“Neither,” she rushed out, feeling overwhelmed by his proximity.

“You’re a horrible liar, McKenna.” Before she could debate his response, Carter kissed her. When he pulled away, he pressed his forehead to hers.

“I messed up, once, it won’t happen again. Stop worrying.”

“I didn’t say I was worried,” she huffed.

“You didn’t have to.” He kissed her temple. “Get some rest.”

He stepped away from the bed and finished preparing to leave.

“I won’t argue, not this time, but we have to figure this out, Carter. You can’t keep secrets. Someone threatened me.”

“I’m handling it.”

“I still need to know what’s going on.”

“I can’t tell you everything.”

“Then you tell me as much as you can. That’s the only way this works.”

He nodded, moved back to the bed, and leaned over McKenna, planting a kiss on her forehead. “We’ll talk, get some rest.”

“Right. Get some rest while your killer friends are out there looking for me.” She rolled her eyes and smiled. “I’ll try.”

“You’re safe here, Kenni. With me is the safest place you can ever be. I give you my word. You don’t have to like me to trust me. I’ve already proven that.”

“Good, because I don’t like you,” she said quietly, watching his face as a smile ghosted his lips, then he was gone.

McKenna stared at the open door for a moment longer before she curled into the bedding, allowing her head to sink into the pillow. A clean scent lightly wafted from the soft fabric and she wished it was his cologne that settled into her spirit. But she was in the guest bed and not his. The longing brought a harsh reality to the forefront.

I’m in love with a killer and not making any excuses for it.

When Brooks opened the door and stepped into the hallway, leaning against the wall, he simply waited but didn’t say a word.

“After I finished with Browning and got back to my place, I found a package waiting,” Carter stated in annoyance

“What was it?”
