“I like him.”

“Do you?” She glanced at her mother.

“Yes, McKenna. I do. He was straight forward with me, he didn’t back down, even when I pushed. I truly feel he’s willing to be a good man and a deserving husband.”

“You thought that about Tevin too so I’m not sure that gives me comfort.”

McKenna grinned when her mother scoffed. “There is a very distinct difference between Tevin and Carter. Tevin is accomplished and more than capable of providing. I felt you would be taken care of and your father and I wouldn’t have to worry so much about you. I’m not however naïve enough to believe that Tevin is the type of man who makes your heart race and scrambles your logic. Carter…” She paused and glanced out into the yard before she turned to her daughter. “Is definitely that.”

“He is…” There was no point in lying to her mother. She wouldn’t.

“Scrambled logic makes for poor life choices, sweetheart. I want you to be happy but more than anything I want you to have someone you can depend on.”

“He’s giving me both. I’m happy and despite my scrambled logic, Carter is the best decision I have ever made in my life. He’s good for me. We’re good for each other and even if you don’t believe that, you’ll have to trust me because he’s my future.”

“I trust you, but I’m also here, so never feel like you can’t be open and honest with me. No matter what.”

“I know.”

“I love you.”

McKenna dropped her head on her mother’s shoulder. “I love you too.”

As soon as Moses created enough distance to avoid his wife’s complaint, he fired up the rolled joint and inhaled a long pull before offering it to Carter. Out of respect, Carter accepted.

“Did my wife play nice?”

Carter smirked and nodded, exhaling a cloud of smoke before he extended his hand back to Moses. “She did.”

“No, she didn’t,” he mumbled with a smile, causing Carter’s to expand. “Kenni’s our only child. It’s only ever been the three of us. My wife’s family didn’t think I was good enough so they tolerated me but they never fully accepted me.”

“I get it.”

Moses nodded. “You have a big family.”

Carter frowned and shook his head. “No.”

“What about your parents? You close with them?”

“Was. I lost them both.”

Moses turned to find Carter’s jaw tight and body tense. “I’m sorry. Losing parents is tough to deal with.”

Carter nodded.

“You were close before then?”

“Yeah. We didn’t have much family either. It was only ever us.”

“How bout I make you a deal, Carter.” Moses turned to him, joint dangling between his fingers. Carter offered his full attention, turning to face him as well.

“A deal?”

If this man tries to pay me off or threatens me to leave his daughter alone I’m gonna fucking lose it because that will never happen.

“Yep, a very simple one.” Moses lifted the joint to his lips, inhaled, and extended it to Carter. He accepted it but didn’t indulge and instead waited to hear what Moses had to say.

“I’m listening.”
