“She’ll keep asking.”

“And I’ll keep avoiding the intricate details of my occupation. Unless you’d prefer I tell her…”

“Absolutely not.” McKenna released a sigh. “I don’t want her judging you before she has a chance to truly know who you are.”

“I don’t give a damn about your mother judging me, Kenni. In a perfect world, she would accept me as a part of your life. If she doesn’t, it will not affect me choosing to be here…” He paused and lowered his eyes to her. Carter’s intense browns blazed on McKenna. “No one and nothing will ever prevent me from being with you. Not even my own selfishness. You told her about me leaving?”

McKenna tensed. “Yes, but not all of it. She kept saying this happened so fast and I explained that it wasn’t fast, that you and I knew each other months ago and took a break. She wanted to know why, so I told her your life was complicated at the time. That’s all she knows. I didn’t go into detail.”

“You could have. I don’t care what your parents know about me. It won’t change who I am and it won’t change who I’ll be for you.”

His intense eyes met hers and she smiled. “And what did you discuss with my father while he was getting you high? I can’t believe he smokes,” she mumbled.

“He doesn’t.” Carter smirked. “Shit was weak as fuck but I would never tell him that.”

“Good, he’s old. He doesn’t need to be smoking.”

“I didn’t know smoking had an age limit because I plan on blazing as long as my lungs can handle it.”

“You can, but not my dad.” She frowned again.

“Let that man do what the fuck he wants. He’s grown, Kenni. But he didn’t say much. Just wanted to look me in my eyes when I told him I got you. He also said that marrying you made me family.”

“It does,” she said quietly and he pulled her in tighter.

“I appreciate that they fuck with me like that.”

She nodded and let her head rest on his chest once more.

“I’m happy,” she said softly and Carter kissed the top of her head.

“Me too, Kenni.”

So fucking happy!

Chapter

Fifteen

McKenna kept checking the time as she navigated through the check-in paperwork for her current patient. They were sitting in a cubicle with an iPad in view for the woman checking in for a cholecystectomy.

Like with most patients she had to deal with, the check-in paperwork had been sent a week prior. But the woman insisted on doing it the day of her surgery so she could have every detail explained. What should have taken thirty minutes was currently registering at fifty-two, which had McKenna incredibly annoyed.

She was the sixth patient that day that had shown up without pre-filled paperwork.

“Ma’am, please verify that this is your full name and birthdate.”

“It is. I already verified it on the other two screens.”

McKenna bit back the annoyance and forced a smile. “You did, but like I explained, each page is different. The information has to be verified on each screen.”

“Fine.” The woman tapped the screen to verify the information and McKenna moved on.

“Do you have a will?”

“Do y’all plan on killing me?” the woman shot back and McKenna gritted her teeth, forcing another smile.

“Of course not. This is simply hospital procedure. If you don’t have a will, you can make a living will with the hospital and…”
