“I have one.” The woman rolled her eyes and McKenna exhaled a slow breath, attempting to remain calm. In the last fifty-two minutes this woman had called her incompetent, accused McKenna of wasting her time, and threatened to speak to a manager. She was damn lucky McKenna hadn’t cursed her the fuck out. “Then please sign here and we’re almost done.”
The woman rolled her eyes, did as asked, and the two navigated through the final screens without incident. McKenna removed one of the hospital bands from the attachment sheet, placed it on the woman’s arm, verified the name, date of birth, and procedure once more before she escorted her to a waiting area, letting her know a nurse would retrieve her shortly.
After she made it back to the desk and notified a nurse that the patient was ready, she handed the folder to Drea and groaned, “Take this, please.”
Drea grabbed the patient’s packet and cut a glance at the waiting woman. “I don’t know why these folks refuse to fill out the paperwork at home where they have time to read it as slowly as they want. Then they have the nerve to come in here annoyed because it takes us too long to get through the process.”
“It’s annoying because they act like we’re the problem.”
“Girl yeah, got us all the way fucked up,” Drea complained.
“Hey, I’m about to head to lunch and I might be a little late. Will you cover for me?”
“Yeah girl, you know I got you,” Drea said before she narrowed her eyes. “Wait, why are you gonna be late?”
“I might not be but I have to meet someone and I don’t know how long it’s going to take.”
“Uh huh I see what the issue is now. You’re trying to have an afternoon quickie.”
“I am not.”
“Then what is he doing here?” Drea’s eyes flicked past her girl whose back was to the elevators so she didn’t see Carter when he stepped off. “With his fine ass.”
McKenna felt him before he reached the desk. Carter’s presence was so overwhelming and lately they were in sync. When she turned, catching the confident stride of his motion as he made his way to the counter, his intense gaze locked on her. She felt an overwhelming sense of attraction rush through her veins.
His dark jeans and dark gray t-shirt fit so perfectly that she couldn’t help but smile, but it was the untamed energy he radiated that demolished everything else around them. He was effortlessly sexy, with a hard expression locked in place that straddled annoyance and arrogance. Her world tilted when he gazed directly at her with an easy smile she knew belonged to only her.
“Hey…” she released quietly when he stopped on the opposite side of the counter.
“Why you look like you stole something, Kenni?” She frowned and his smile expanded. “You don’t want me up here?”
“Why wouldn’t I want you up here?”
A devilish smile spread across Drea’s face as she thoroughly looked Carter over. “Be as late as you want, girl. I’m not gonna be a hater. This man is fine as fuck,” Drea said and turned, extending a hand. “Hi, I’m the best friend and you are so damn sexy.”
Carter chuckled and accepted her hand. “Drea?”
She grinned. “Oh girl, let me find out you been telling him about me.”
“Drea, don’t make me embarrass you.”
She smiled and rolled her eyes. “Girl, relax. I’m just enjoying the view.” She turned to McKenna. “Seriously though, take your time. I got you.”
“Thanks, booski.”
McKenna pulled the drawer below the counter open and removed her purse. She was about to walk away when Drea spoke again.
“Oh shit. Wait, before you go, I need a tampon. Do you have any on you?”
McKenna froze and her eyes quickly darted to Carter. It wasn’t until that very minute that she realized she didn’t but only because she hadn’t bought any in months. Two to be exact, because she hadn’t needed them.
“No, sorry.”
Drea was about to say something but a patient walked up needing to be checked in so she arched a brow at McKenna and offered a smug smile before she turned to go help them.
McKenna’s mind was going a mile a minute, doing calculations while Carter escorted her through the hospital to his car. As soon as they were both inside, his eyes were on her. They lowered to her stomach then slowly rose to her face.
“You pregnant, Kenni?”
