“You sound sure.”

“Because I am.” Kohen rounded the bar and filled the spot next to Carter. “Is this what you want? To have a family with McKenna?”

Once again, Carter laughed dryly. “I’m the one who set this shit in motion, so yeah it’s what I want.”

“I’ve known you since you were a child, Carter. First through your father’s words, then after we crossed paths. You’re not the type of person who fails. Especially when you want something. If having a family is what you want then you’ll do everything in your power to make it work. You’ll exceed beyond capabilities you deemed possible because you were right about one thing, you can’t fuck this up. It will no longer just be about you, Carter. It will be about McKenna and your child. I’m speaking from experience, so you can be assured I know what the fuck I’m talking about.”

Carter nodded and lifted his glass. “I’ve never feared anything in my life, Kohen. Not a gotdamn thing but now…” He shook his head. “I’m living the worst fear of my life.”

“Failing them.”

He nodded stiffly. “I’m so fucking terrified of failing them and that shit makes me angry because that’s not me. I don’t like looking at her and thinking about things that I can’t control.”

“You’re angry because you feel vulnerable.”

“Because I am,” he growled in annoyance.

“Loving someone doesn’t make you weak, Carter. It tests your strength but it doesn’t make you weak. It makes you whole and when you’re whole, there’s not a damn thing on earth that can stand against you. You’ll be fine. McKenna and the baby will be fine because that’s the only reality you’re willing to accept.”

Carter released a sigh and raked a hand down his face. “And how the fuck do I raise a son or a daughter? Shit, maybe both.”

He wanted as many kids as McKenna was willing to have.

“The same way your father raised you. The connection is there, Carter. It will always be there. Rely on that and you’ll be just fine.”

Carter: You in the car yet?

McKenna: Wow, you don’t already know considering you’re always spying on me…

Carter: Why are you always talking shit? Get your ass in the car and get home. I miss y’all.

A smile blossomed on McKenna’s face. I miss y’all.

McKenna: I’m on the elevator now. I’ll be at my car in a minute. Are you there? You have a terrible habit of rushing me home to an empty apartment.

Carter: On my way. Picking up dinner, now hurry your ass up.

McKenna: So demanding. You just be ready to handle me when I get there.

She smiled as she stepped off the elevator into the parking garage.

Carter: You know I got you. Feed my baby and fuck his mother.

His…

Carter wanted a son so bad. She refused to acknowledge the sex until they knew for sure.

McKenna: Such a romantic and dutiful husband. I’m at the car. See you soon.

Carter: Drive safe.

She locked the phone and dropped it into her purse just as a deep, accented voice sounded from behind her.

“You really should be more aware of your surroundings, McKenna.”

A wave of panic flooded her system and she turned, catching the eyes of a man she didn’t recognize. His accent though was distinct. African.

Her pulse thumped and her eyes widened, which caused his to narrow.
