“I have no intentions of harming you, McKenna. You can relax.”

He knows who I am.

“Stop saying my name and don’t tell me to relax. Who are you?”

“Gahigi Uwera.”

Uwera.

“Your husband’s uncle and I only want to talk; that’s all.”

“You didn’t feel the better option was to pick up a phone, or at the very least, come to my floor inside the hospital where there would be plenty of other people around? Why here in the parking garage?” She narrowed her eyes.

“I thought this was more appropriate. Your husband doesn’t know I’m here. He wouldn’t approve.”

“Is that supposed to make me feel better?”

He gave McKenna a self-deprecating smile. “I suppose not.”

He shifted his stance and slipped his hands into his pockets. “Carter is my nephew. You are his wife. You are carrying his child. You are my family. I would never harm you, McKenna. There’s been enough of that in the past.”

“Family doesn’t mean anything to you. Your father killed his own daughter.”

She noticed the dark shadows in his eyes.

“And your husband killed him. I had nothing to do with either, but had Carter not ended my father, I would have. I wasn’t aware of what happened to Keza or Kivuli. Our father knew better than to make me aware of what he’d done. I loved my sister. Kivuli was my friend.”

“Forgive me if I don’t believe you because I don’t. You should go now.”

“I’m leaving but I’d like to ask a favor.”

She narrowed her eyes. “You ambushed me in a parking garage and you want to ask for a favor?”

“I do. I would like to speak to my nephew.”

“Clearly he’s not with me. Why didn’t you reach out to him?”

“He won’t accept any communication from me.”

“Then why not just show up like you’re doing now and demand that he talk to you.”

Gahigi smirked. “You know your husband, McKenna. I said no more bloodshed amongst family. You are compassionate. You love him and want what’s best for my nephew. My hope is that you can get him to hear me out.”

“Why would I do that?”

“My sister has her name back. That was your doing. Family is important to you.”

A scowl eased onto McKenna’s face.

“How do you know about that?”

“I’m resourceful. McKenna Smith Reed.”

Her mouth dropped open and he continued. “Employee number S374.You searched my sister’s name in your hospital records. Both Keza and Kivuli have been flagged since they disappeared years ago. First by my father, then by me. When you looked them up, I was notified. I’m grateful because it brought me here to you. I wouldn’t have otherwise known how to find my nephew.”

McKenna felt sick. She had inadvertently led this man to them.

“I mean neither of you any harm, McKenna. I just want to know you, my nephew, and your child.” His eyes lowered to her stomach and her hand covered it protectively. “I’ve lost so much. No more blood will be shed with my family but I don’t expect you to believe me. Tell Carter I’d like to speak with him. The decision will be his but I’m hoping you will add your influence.”
