“I don’t control Carter, he does what he wants.”

He smiled smugly, removed something from his pocket, kneeled, and placed it on the ground. “I mean no disrespect but I’m assuming you don’t want to be anywhere near me.” His eyes flicked to the items before turning to walk away. He paused briefly and added, “Your husband and I are a lot alike. If I wanted to hurt you, McKenna, I could have. I didn’t. That’s not why I’m here.”

She watched him until he entered the stairwell then slowly moved forward and lifted a keycard and piece of paper, realizing he’d written down The Metropolitan and his suite number. She exhaled a shaky breath, relaxing enough to get in the car and leave, confused about what she needed to do with that information because telling Carter might not be the best option.

As soon as McKenna walked in the door and made it to the kitchen, Carter was on her. He lifted her effortlessly onto the counter, shoved his hand into her hair, and his mouth crashed against hers. When he let her up for air, he was lifting her top and kissing McKenna’s stomach.

She assumed he came straight home and showered, based on his bare chest and sweats combined with the scent of his freshly washed skin and cologne wafting into her nose, providing a sense of home. One of her favorite ways to experience Carter.

“What’s up, lil man? You chillin’ in there?”

McKenna smiled down at her husband, enjoying the way he already loved their child, hating that she was about to ruin the moment.

“I need to tell you something,” she said softly. When he extended to his full height with a menacing glare she almost changed her mind.

“What?”

She slipped her hand in the pocket of her scrubs and removed the paper and keycard which she passed to Carter.

“What the fuck is this?”

“Your uncle came to the?—”

The way his eyes darkened sent a chill down her spine.

“My uncle?” His voice was arctic and she cringed.

“He asked me to give you this.”

Carter crushed the items in his fist.

“He didn’t touch me. He wanted me to ask you?—”

“This is where he is?”

She nodded and he walked away. McKenna panicked and eased off the counter, following him to the bedroom. She caught him just as he yanked a hoodie over his head and walked into the closet, returning with running shoes on his feet. He snatched up keys, his phone, then was on his way to the door.

“Where are you going?”

“You know where the fuck I’m going, McKenna.”

Shit, he’s going to kill his uncle.

“To do what?”

His icy glare met her concerned one. “Stay here, I’ll be back.”

“Carter…”

“Stay the fuck here, Kenni. I’ll be back.” He wrapped his hand around her neck and kissed her softly then he was gone.

It took Carter half an hour to get to The Metropolitan. The keycard granted him access to the private elevator that led to a suite. When the doors opened, he had a gun aimed at his uncle's head, fully prepared to pull the trigger.

Gahigi stood in the center of the room facing the elevator, relaxed and unmoved by his nephew. If today was his last day on earth, at least he spent it trying to rebuild a family that was destroyed years ago.

“Were you really fucking stupid enough to pull up on my wife?”

“Stupid, no. Determined, yes.”
