“Both get you killed, so same difference. What the fuck are you doing here?”

“We’re family.”

“Blood doesn’t make you family.”

“I disagree. The DNA can’t be denied, epwa.” Nephew.

“I thought I made myself clear when I said you could go fuck yourself. I don’t want or need anything from you.”

“That might be true, but I don’t feel the same. Family doesn’t give up on family.”

Carter sneered his disapproval. “I’m sure my mother wouldn’t agree.”

Gahigi’s eyes darkened. “I never gave up on her. I’m the only reason she survived as long as she did. I’m the reason you exist. If I didn’t care about or love my sister, I would have chosen my father’s side. I did not.”

He turned his back and walked away from Carter, taking a seat on the sofa, where he dropped his arms to his knees and exhaled a sigh. “I would change the past if I could. I cannot. We both lost?—”

“You didn’t lose shit, but I did,” Carter growled.

“Again, I disagree. I helped raise your mother. I loved and protected her. She never wanted to leave Africa. My father was a cruel man. He made Keza go with us to punish our mother. She wanted to leave him so he left her and took her children. A few years after we arrived in The States, we got word that someone murdered our mother.”

Carter’s eyes flickered with understanding and Gahigi nodded. “It was never confirmed but I believe her death was our father’s doing. He was an arrogant and malicious man. Our mother refused to do what he wanted. Keza refused to do what he wanted. I was grateful when she ran. I lost my sister but it was necessary so I prayed that she was safe. If he really killed our mother…”

He would have killed my mother for choosing my father.

He eventually did.

Carter lowered the gun and moved to the living room, sitting across from his uncle. His thoughts were heavy as the two stared at each other. “I had nothing to do with what happened to Keza and your father.” Gahigi spoke quietly but in a stern voice. “You are her son. Your wife is carrying my great niece or nephew. I only want the opportunity to know you. All of you.”

Carter spoke honestly. “I can’t trust you with my family. Who I am is bad enough, but the things you’re connected to…”

“It will never touch you. My father is no longer in charge. I am. I give you my word that we will not be an issue for you or your family. However, our organization will touch anyone that means you or your family harm.”

Carter’s brows pinched as he stared at his uncle before he lifted and headed to the elevators. “I’ll think about it.”

“Good enough.” Gahigi nodded and Carter made himself clear.

“If you ever approach my wife again without my permission, there will be more bloodshed in this family. Yours.”

“I apologize, respectfully, and it will never happen again.”

Carter stepped onto the elevator and left, feeling no more at ease than when he arrived.

As soon as McKenna stepped out of the shower she felt his energy. He’s back.

She quickly dried her body and tossed on a t-shirt without anything under it, traveling from the bedroom to where she found Carter in the same place she’d found him what felt like a million times since she’d been here. Looking down at the city, hands placed above his head while it was bowed, smoke seeping from his lips.

His upper body was exposed, feet bare, and his muscles flexed and shifting with the slightest movement. She crossed the room and dipped under his arm, pressing her back against the metal framing, attempting to catch his eyes. It took a minute because he turned his head to exhale a cloud of smoke instead of allowing it to reach her face.

They stared at each other for what felt like an eternity before Carter dipped his head and kissed McKenna then walked away, but caught her wrist, bringing her with him. He ashed the blunt in the glass block sitting on the ottoman, filled the center of the sofa, and brought her down on his lap so they were facing each other. Her knees pressed into the cushions beside his thighs and he placed his hands on her stomach.

“Can we talk about it?”

“About what, Kenni?” Carter lowered his eyes, knowing exactly what she wanted to discuss.

“Did you kill him?” His dark gaze landed on hers, expression neutral when he shook his head.

“But I should have. He pulled up on my wife.”
